Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Ridiculous.

They are already through the worst of it in China. It has been seven weeks.

Collectively I'm actually much more assured by the relatively measured UK approach than the panic lockdown mode of our European neighbours.

I suspect they’re “through the worst of it” because everyone is locked inside and risks jail for disobeying government measures.

Anyone who has kids will understand what it is like to have your life flipped upside down. I'm still waiting for it to return to a resemblance of normality and it's been 8 years already.

Glasto will be on next year, no need to worry. It will soon fly around. Patience.

But you have read enough to think it might be biological warfare. We might leave this one up to the health experts mate, yeah?
I asked the question.

You must be the black sheep, managing to get away from the others.

Aren't you meant to be in isolation ?

So Glasto gone now too.

Pathetic.

Honestly what's the point? We might as well all get it and just be miserable all year. Everything's getting cancelled (somehow the Reds will still win the league too).

The absolute panic this has caused is depressing and far more worrying than the actual illness.

It's 14 weeks away and they've canned it. 14. This thing will be over in 6 regardless of the government plans working or not.

If their plan works, the NHS will be able to manage it and life will be able to return to - relatively - normal. More people working from home etc, definitely, but a bit of normality.

If the plan doesn't work then I'm sad to say that by the end of April most people will have had it, have got through it and got an immunity or, sadly, died. And the proportion of people which die from it will still be very small - it's just obviously gonna be a lot more than if the gov's plan to spread out the impact works.

Chatting a lot of selfish wham with very little supporting facts here I’m afraid.

My entire family is self-employed so I'm very worried about all these measures and what they mean going forward.

I do a bit of writing for music sites too and Glasto was gonna be a bit of extra money for me around the Euros. Now they've both gone.

My sister has lost work already and will lose more. My mum has lost work. The only one unaffected so far is my Dad and it won't be long until he sees work drop off if these measures get stricter (which I know they will do).

Forgive me for being far more concerned over the impact of these actual measures than whether or not a flu bug is going around, albeit one which is clearly spreading like something we haven't seen before.

Maybe you should have tuned into the MP brief last night and you might understand that the financial support will be there for everyone whilst this goes on.

I’d be in favour of an immediate increase in taxation to fund small businesses directly. An additional 5% for all income over £25,000 for example.

Combine this with a government bailout as occurred with the banks.

I’d like to think our wealthiest would have the decency to contribute also. Unless they’d rather see the economy which they’ve all profited from so merrily tank for years that is.

We all need to play our part here.
REALLY ????

You'll come through it stronger mate.

As they say, when the going gets tough the tough get going.

Good luck

Why's it selfish?

I understand why it has been cancelled. I get it. They needed to make a decision quickly and I accept the reasons Nymzee. Totally. Can still be disappointed. Maybe my phrasing was a bit strong.

Second part of my post - I am simply stating what I've seen the plan to be from the government so far. It's not selfish at all. Do you really, really think that this thing is going to go on for three months at this level, given how quickly it has spread so far? Genuinely?

We're getting daily updates. The rise is what, double every day in terms of UK cases? And you think it's going to be three months?

I just don't see it. If the gov had put their plan in earlier, then yes, yes maybe it would be. But now? There's no chance we can be, what, four weeks behind Italy in terms of cases? It was less than two weeks since their lockdown?

Yep fair do's. And in China they have a lot more stringent measures. Fair enough.

My head's a little all over the place at the minute, as i'm sure a lot of people's are.

I don't know what the solution is. I just don't think 'cancel everything' for the rest of the year is one either.
I do really think that our (prime minister) in Ireland was right on the money when he spoke last night, he said take breaks from social media and constant news and get out for a walk, your mental health is as important as your physical health. If you are on social media bin it off for a few hours turn off the TV get out for a walk if you can, clear your head lad.

And when it's over and sorted how are the citizens then going to be asked to pay back.

Unless you think all the governments are going to let this slide.

What did they say about low income people who pay rent. Are they getting a break too? Assuming the landlords don't need to pay the mortgage? Didn't see if they covered that

Thanks. I'll admit my head is a bit all over the place and I am worrying.

I am not meaning to sound callous. It's just more bad news on bad news and I think it's all spiraling out of control when there's no evidence that we'll actually need it to.

I expected Glasto to go. I'm not surprised. It's just a bit crap, innit.
