Indeed. Lockdown advocates are basically asking the government to prop up vast numbers of organisations, and the people who are/used to be employed by them. That's a level of welfare that's unprecedented and I'm not sure just how feasible it is.

It isn't going to matter soon enough, people will stop going to pubs, restaurants, cinemas, cafes, zoos soon enough when the numbers of infected start to rise sharply...and those businesses will have no choice but to cut staff or close completely for the foreseeable future...

Looking at the Skyline webcams in Italy showing totally deserted public spaces in major cities. And in Tenerife, beach entrances cordoned off, policemen the only humans in sight . It’s all very weird.

South Korean news are reporting that Corona has mutated in to a computer virus after a fella sneezed on his computer. If this thing takes the internet down, we are totally screwed.

I’d be in favour of an immediate increase in taxation to fund small businesses directly. An additional 5% for all income over £25,000 for example.

Combine this with a government bailout as occurred with the banks.

I’d like to think our wealthiest would have the decency to contribute also. Unless they’d rather see the economy which they’ve all profited from so merrily tank for years that is.

We all need to play our part here.

"We were expecting herd immunity to build. We now realise it’s not possible to cope with that," professor Azra Ghani, chair of infectious diseases epidemiology at Imperial, told journalists at a briefing on Monday night.

"In the UK, this conclusion has only been reached in the last few days," the report explained, due to new data on likely intensive care unit demand based on the experience of Italy and Britain so far.

I have just seen that Irish Revenue Commissioners have deferred collection of Local Property Tax for two months to those who pay by Direct Debit.

March and April payments dates now cancelled, and to resume in May.

Sensible approach by Government as every little helps particularly for those off work.

I'm not a supporter of any party, but I think our government has been as good as possible so far in this. Probably no harm having a doctor in charge at this time.

Thanks for sharing, hopefully getting over that initial spike and whether health systems can cope with that will be instrumental. Initially it's going to be hard without doubt but after that, we're at levels that our manageable.

The Johnson Government gambled they and the hand picked medical advisers they chose knew better than the World Health Organisation and the experience of other governments who had already gone through the early stages of Coronavirus. They didn't. They gambled with all our lives.
