I'm not so much surprised at what Cummings has done, stupid as it may be. I'm surprised that senior government officials are defending him. He simply must walk

I’m not.

They’re not bothered about facts or truth. They have no regard for the critical thinking of the public so know all they need to do is throw out a few tweets, peddle a catchphrase (political point scoring) and people will fall for it.

Cummings doesn’t believe in society, truth, science, establishment and this government is built on that image.

Downing Street has appeared to suggest Durham Constabulary was being misleading when it told the media last night that it spoke to Dominic Cummings' family over the alleged lockdown breach.

Number 10 said this morning that "at no stage was he or his family spoken to by the police about this matter, as is being reported".

However, Steve White, Durham Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner, said in a statement this lunchtime:

"In relation to the incident where Dominic Cummings visited Durham during lockdown Durham constabulary acted appropriately. Given the whole ethos of the guidance and regulations issued from the government was to reduce the spread, regardless of reason, by traveling to County Durham when known to be infected was most unwise. To beat this crisis we need to be selfless as millions have been. The response by the people of County Durham and Darlington have been exemplary, which makes this most frustrating and concerning"

"Incidents such as this do not help, and I can appreciate that the longer this goes on the harder it gets, but I encourage the people of County Durham and Darlington to keep up the outstanding effort seen so far by using common sense when following the guidance to stay alert and continue to social distance"

Sounds like that Steve White is worried that people will see what Cummings did and the government saying he did nothing wrong as the green light.

No. I’ve obeyed the lockdown and so should he...this hyperventilating angst that is being generated though is oxygen to this guy. He should have been slapped with a fine or whatever Kinnock got for doing the same.......

Kinnock didn't have coronavirus, nor did his wife when they visited. He also didn't stay for a couple of weeks with his parents, exposing them to the virus.

Better whataboutery please.

Would make an interesting case study for test, trace and track this.

It`s similar to me driving to Cornwall with the kids, knowing I`ve got the virus, which usually requires a minimum of at least three stops at the services, for food, drink, toilet breaks. All the while bringing me into contact with numerous people, who are travelling all over the country
Ha. I bet the new contact tracing app would go into meltdown with that one mate

So what should be done with him ? I don’t give a toss to be honest, sack him, shoot him, hang draw and quarter him, it just all seems a bit over the top.....

posted five minutes after:

If he’s any good, No, if he’s not, Yes.....

and by the person who said....

I’m very glad he has quit. That Imperial College guy, Neil Ferguson, has been the one who spooked everyone with his forecasts and has a history of getting them wrong. So we should all be glad he’s gone......I reckon he’s done this on purpose to slide away......

... but to answer your question - he should resign, both because what even he says he did is completely wrong (never mind what he actually did) and because he is putting the government he works for at risk, a risk which will ramp up and up all weekend as they vainly try to defend him. I won't get into everything else he has done (in this crisis and beforehand) because that should be a matter for the Courts.

How would you know, seriously. Government expenditure is a matter of record. You are a small cog in a very large machine, you may get the odd visibility of one part of the finance within a single hospital, but will not see the whole picture apart from the odd briefing.

The House of Commons keeps a full record, which obviously is agreed by the political parties. Now as you can see, as a percentage of GDP there is a slight reduction, but amongst other things that is determined by the growth and strength of the economy, however the expenditure is real money actually spent, and it has risen and continues to do so. How the NHS decide to spend the money is an NHS issue, but we, the taxpayer and the government, cannot be faulted for the amount we give......

Because I have eyes Pete. Don't dare attach the tax payer to the government as if I'm attacking them for not coughing up enough, nor a graph of spends spanning over decades when the population is much, much bigger, and healthcare more complex. The NHS is not a waste of money or resources, and some things you have to be a cog in the machine to see...

That's not the point Pete. Labour and Kinnock aren't telling the country what to do. Boris, to whom Cummings is a senior aide, is.

This is not about Cummings per se. It's about retaining some elements of support and respect from the country in the battle against coronavirus.
