Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

the most disappointing thing about Hyde Park at present is that 90% of cyclists appear to be unable to recognize which lane on the paths are for bikes

I suspect the majority are very new to cycling, so don't really know what they're doing. I saw a lot of kids there today, which is nice. It was more like scenes you see during the Free Cycle in August.

Like I mentioned a few posts ago, enforcement by the way of the fine has been made as a semi-last resort and actually arresting people is even further away.

There is no real will from central government for any real level of enforcement, and therefore ACPO won't push it either. The CPS aren't supportive either.

"If we're nice and friendly people will follow and do the right thing" Unfortunately, the goodwill has started to fade away and people will start to take the Michael.

I honestly think the fact that it's going to be relatively freezing tomorrow means police, government and everyone else isn't that arsed. They know there'll have been extra transmission on Friday and Saturday, but they also know no-one's going to be sitting around drinking beer, smoking spliffs and chatting for a few days, so it's likely to even itself out over the course of five or six days.

That is (or was) usually my favourite day of the year in London; you can walk from Vauxhall to Barnes Bridge and for the vast majority of it not have to deal with any cars, pollution etc.

Khan should really be taking the opportunity to remind people what the air is like now, how beautiful the place is and that this is why we should as far as possible get rid of cars, vans etc from the city.

Not having that. People have personal responsibility and this country has forgotten that.

Why would people believe what's written in the tabloids for a start. And even if they are daft enough to believe everything they read, the stories all talked about changes on monday. And Saturday is before Monday as far as I'm aware.

People will use any excuse under the sun to justify their own care free behaviour. It's the way of the modern world and the media are making it far worse.
I think if the government came out tomorrow and explicitly said anybody breaking social distancing rules will be hit with a £250 fine, then you would very, very quickly see fewer people about once the police stand handing out fines.

Not just the air either. You can actually see the bottom of the lakes, and birds are nesting in all sorts of funky places. It's been super for the environment.

Spot on, it’s got nothing to do with the Government or the Police, it’s just a section of society that wants to do what it wants regardless.

They have no respect for authority in any form whatsoever and short of curfews etc will carry on regardless.

You are missing the point here and reeling off the classic baby-boomer narrative.

There is nothing wrong with people celebrating at the time, I get that and it makes sense.

It is now 2020. The military are being fetishized and there have been many of questionable wars.

If people wanted to remember it at home privately, which I am sure they did, thats fine.

The government are using it for PR, people are dying each day, people are ignoring social distancing to do the conga, to by bunting and for an ethnic cleanser deliver a speech. This all happened yesterday and people may die because of this in 15 days time.

And then there are happy dressing up in all happy clappy 1940's stuff like it was a novelty.

But if want to hang on to a something that happened 75 years ago, you do that.
Why do I often feel as though I need to apologise for when I was born whenever I come on this forum. It's a bit sad really.

Anyway, back to the point, I thought you were disrespecting VE day itself, which is why I came across a bit angry in my post. If that's not the case, I apologise. Having said that, I still don't see why you can't just let those that want to take part in celebrations do so. As I've said, I didn't and neither did I watch any of the special programmes that were on TV throughout the night. I take your point at the attempts at social distancing in the many street parties that were shown on the late evening news however. Not that I saw any congas.

But I can't blame people for doing stuff if I'm honest, nor the media for bigging it up to a degree. People need a break and a release from coronavirus which is all we live with 24/7. Whilst you have a point re the social distancing, VE day is a one off event. There are thousands of cases every day of people ignoring lockdown restrictions all over the country, from visiting family and friends, going to house parties and youths congregating in gangs. These have a far bigger and prolonged impact on our ability to get new cases down.

And as for the PR comment, do you really believe that if Labour were in government, that they wouldn't have celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE day?

Sounds like you could do with cycling to be fair
Ah one of the Lycra gang I surmise. I do actually own a Trek hybrid and have used it for work, but even in Hull where they have made a great effort to be accommodating, it can still be a treacherous journey. As likely down to me and my reactions as other vehicle owners.

I think the next stage will be less about making people stay in all the time and more about making people realise what distancing is actually about when they are out.

I dont think people have realised yet that you cant distance if you deliberately head to the busiest places at the busiest times. It's not that complicated but lots just don't get it.

A few weeks ago, I’d see people getting pulled up and I’m just not seeing that any more.

Speke seems to be full of people having BBQ’s and on the ale. Woolton is full of teenagers, as are the surrounding parks.
There’s been mention of Sefton Park being the same.

How can you realistically police this !
It's nowhere near as bad down here mate. People seem a bit more in your face going around the supermarkets and I've noticed more traffic on the roads, but other than that it's fine. There are people on the beaches, but not that many and you could see they were keeping to immediate family.

People down here have generally done as they were told. Which is probably ne of the reasons we have the lowest figures in the country. But I guess that makes us more vulnerable to a second wave.

All this makes you realise just how close we naturally get to one another - was chatting to a bloke today in the park about the footie whilst walking the dog and had to keep reminding myself to keep so much distance - bloody hard to do as its so unnatural

What can 3 or 4 Police Officers do against hundreds of people.

Imagine the headlines if they rolled up in riot vans and started battling with people and thereby putting themselves at risk of catching it too ??

It`s a no win situation.
I'd love them to come up with more detail on the 5000+ new cases being announced daily. Where are the hot spots?, and I want specifics not regions like the North East or Scotland. If nothing else it may encourage people in those areas to stay at home.
