I don't claim to know more than the Chief Medical Officer. Cool if you do like.

This really. The top scientific people of the U.K. are advising the Government what to do and they are apparently following advice. Meanwhile all the sad lefties are trying to blame Boris, the Tories or whatever, yet defending the country that started the bleeding virus in the first place. The U.K. faces a mega health problem and what it does not need is ideological warfare at this particular moment in time. Let’s just get through it then throw your stones.....

What would you do in this situation?

My Mum has a longstanding booking to fly out to visit me here in Germany tomorrow. At the moment she's planning to come because she's following FCO advice which is not warning against travelling to Germany, although an increasing amount of countries are doing so. She's 66, overweight, smoker, has been on meds for high blood pressure in the past etc.

I don't really want her going through 2 airports (Heathrow and Frankfurt - quite big ones) and on a plane. I guess if she gets infected she'll be at high risk of complications and even the worst happening.

On the other hand the German health system seems better equipped to deal with cases so she might be better off over here in the worst case.

But I think it's best to tell her to postpone her trip and stay at home for a while. Any opinions welcome.
Thanks a lot for the opinions everyone. I'll ask her to postpone and stay out of harm's way. The only thing stopping me was the thought that an overwhelmed NHS might not be able to treat her if the worst happened but should be focusing on minimising her infection risk in the first place rather than thinking about that.

The point is that the armed forces do not have enough medical staff as it is; thats why NHS reservists play such a massive role and stripping what exists means that the armed forces can't do their actual job of protecting the country, never mind provide the care they currently provide (which is only up to a certain level anyway) for service families, which puts the burden on the NHS.

Saying "get the army in" is all well and good but as we have seen with other crises they just do not have that much capacity to help.

excuse the pun but every little helps. I think this is a case of protecting the country. Our NHS is about to be overrun and our govt should be drafting in all the help they can get.

Doctors and medical staff in Italy describe it as a war and they are not using that term loosely. It will crash our NHS System and people will die who really shouldn’t.

So, that's it then. Johnson and his cabal of ideological quacks "The U.K. Scientific Advisory Group" are just going to leave us exposed and let this thing rip the country apart.

What would you do Dave. Close everywhere down then have no money to pay for anything ?, close all the schools forcing numerous nurses and key workers to stay at home to look after them or put them with grandparents who will then pick up any germs going. Doing something is infinitely easier than doing the right thing. Boris is being advised what to do, he is not stupid, he will do as advised. If you know a better way please let us know.....

Very hard not to avoid politics when you read stuff like this Pete or hear Trump with his own words say he preferred to keep people on the Grand Princess because he didn’t want them counted in US numbers

it will, but that is what happens when you strip everything back to leave lean, businesslike, etc etc etc structures

or people are looking at countries who have experience in facing epidemics recently (china, Singapore etc) from SARS.. and judging our response against that.

2 no mark advisers who came up with a fancy graph on power point with absolutely no historical basis against the countries above who seem to have sorted themselves out

I won’t defend Trump, and I like many on here think we should do more, but we have to put our trust in those that understand these things.....
