the pro-Government posters usually do
This government are actually dealing with this crisis only the lines of Jeremy Corbyn's tag line..... 'for the many, not the few'.

Taking the drastic actions many people are calling for may save a few lives in the short term but cause a lot more in the long term. Luckily this government can see the bigger picture.

FYI - I voted Labour and despise Boris but I actually agree with this response.

They do, but as they have found it isnt as much about the disease as it is about it exposing the lack of capacity in the local health system.

Allowing this disease to spread - which is pretty much the road they've gone down - is going to over the next few weeks / months ramp up pressure on the NHS considerably; it was already under considerable pressure.

Almost impossible to stop

Covid-19 is new, has no vaccine, and relatively speaking, very little is known about the virus, how it spreads, how long it lasts, what conditions it thrives in etc.
The mortality rate is very high. Take a look at what is happening in Italy.
Sure, people have been acting like berks when it comes to hoarding but I dont think the media are over reacting.
So not explaining exactly what effects you are likely to get but making sure you cover the most extreme isn't over reacting?

The virus is real, it's contagious and yes it needs to be contained and slowed down as much as humanly possible right now.

But if it is giving people mild case of the flu essentially then wouldn't the population feel better knowing that? All I get the impression of is that if you catch it you will end up struggling to breathe. That may be true in some cases but others aren't , with some not even aware they have it.

The UK government has updated its coronavirus advice, following the latest emergency meeting of ministers and their advisers this afternoon. Here are the key points.

  • if you have symptoms of coronavirus infection (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home and do not leave your house for 7 days from when your symptoms started. (See Ending Isolation section below for more information)
  • this action will help protect others in your community whilst you are infectious.
  • plan ahead and ask others for help to ensure that you can successfully stay at home.
  • ask your employer, friends and family to help you to get the things you need to stay at home.
  • stay at least 2 metres (about 3 steps) away from other people in your home whenever possible.
  • sleep alone, if that is possible.
  • wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, each time using soap and water.
  • stay away from vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions as much as possible.
  • you do not need to call NHS111 to go into self-isolation. If your symptoms worsen during home isolation or are no better after 7 days contact NHS 111 online. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999.

Will be interesting to see how people react to potential "distancing restrictions" if the virus doesn't die off and is here to stay

All well and good now but imagine we get to September, the summer hasnt killed it off nor has a vaccine been found - 4-5 months of no sporting events/concerts/race meetings or being aloud to go down the pub/restaurants will soon become very tedious for a lot of people.

I fear we are going to be turned into a population that literally lives to work and nothing
An interesting comment from a scientist (I didn't catch his name) on Radio 4 this morning. The basic gist appeared to be that in and of itself banning large public gatherings wasn't about stopping the spread of the coronavirus, as it doesn't really spread that way anyway, but rather to convince the public that it's serious enough that they should be doing the hand hygiene stuff that does contribute to its spread.

Umm, no

The idea is to not treat this as a mild flu or respiratory problem, the idea is to make it clear that you should avoid contracting this as the mortality rate among the elderly is really high.
This is like nothing we've seen in our lifetime.

A lot of scaremongering..... this thing that's killed a few thousand is the same as that thing that killed about 15 million.

Erm

Mate, do you believe cancer kills people? Because it starts out small and insignificant. If you believe early detection and treatment saves lives in cancer then why not believe this. The math is the same.

Or do you believe in investing for the future? It can all be done last minute right? No need for all this “start investing early” lark, it’s just scaremongering from financial advisors trying to sell a product. The math is the same.

I watched the entire presser just now. I think people need to get off Boris' back a little. It's clear we have one NHS that can only handle so much. It's also clear we have some very inconsiderate or care free or cavalier or ignorant people who will be the weakest people in dealing with containment within our own households & more liable to spread in public & will be the reason the strain on this NHS will be greater. The scientists have basically said that the British public can not be trusted to stay still for a prolonged period which is probably very true.
With that, it's better to spread it out. By pushing the peak back & down we have more time to learn. I do wish he came out stronger on the point of being in charge of our own virus. It's out there now & the best person to deal with this is YOU. If YOU don't wash your hands or self isolate when feeling ill or avoid large gatherings then we simply don't have the NHS to deal with it.
