And tbh, I have no idea how other parts of the country fare in terms of healthcare capabilities. You see stats around differing spending on transport and so on, but I have no clue if the same applies for healthcare, ie if parts of the country have less capacity to deal with an outbreak than, say, London does. Obviously there are parts of the country with a toxic combo of an elderly population and few emergency care facilities (or staff), so you just hope there's enough for everyone.
I’m not well placed to comment on our local health infrastructure (although there have been two reviews by independent experts which suggested the system needs major reform). What we do have is a high prevalence of mental health issues and associated health problems due to the legacy of the Troubles and years of stunted economic growth as a result.

Ironically NI has been found to be the“happiest” part of the U.K. in previous ONS wellbeing studies despite having one of the highest prescription rates for anti-depressants.

Cheap Labour only gets you so far. Burberry making gowns shows that when you really need stuff, you can only rely on yourself. I’m not saying that everything will come flowing back to the U.K., but over reliance on Financial and other Services needs rebalancing with manufacturing and this may provide the stimulus to think again.....
one would hope so Pete, but I cannot see capitalists giving up profits too easily
I seen a programme a few years ago where they took a lady who lost her job in a textile factory to a production plant in India
They brought her to the plant in India ,which had recently shut down and moved to China for cheaper labour
Even the company I work for ,a major British multinational (now american owned ) and a household name built a purpose built factory in Poland to take advantage of lower labour costs
At the time our wages would have been roughly 800 euro a WEEK while in Poland at the time it was 60 euro a MONTH

There is the reason right there
Its a major issue down south as well

We already pay N.I., but I do agree with you. Having always paid for additional private health, I believe all healthcare money is money well spent.....
I have never really agreed with a two tier system of healthcare, in an ideal world the NHS should be properly funded and people should not feel the need to go private.
That said it is not an ideal world and I would not criticise anyone for going private.
If you can afford it it's your money and there probably isn't a better way to spend it.

Enjoy these days Pete
I have not seen my grandkids for over a month now and I am missing them
Facetime and Skype are not the same as actual visits
Even though the youngest girl tells me I am really old and the man on the tv tells me to stay indoors all the time
FFS I am 59 and still maintaining vital equipment at work ( chocolate making machines )

Haha, kids eh....

If I was Chris Witty and that other guy who stands behind one of those podiums on the daily updates I would get the hell out of here... it’s so clear that the Government are going to through them under the bus when the inevitable enquiry starts.
Take the pay take the pain. It's so obvious Witty and Valence are under the influence political mandarin masters. I know in the UK contrary is a default, however, they have ignored World health organisation too many times.

We are tip-toeing our way out of it in NZ. Just 17 new cases in 24 hours but 68 more recovered. The number of new cases every day is dropping and expected to soon be into single figures. Roughly half our identified cases have recovered. Big thing is our community transmission is low. We have a good chance of eliminating it. But not without cost.

4 lives lost today takes us to a total of 9. There will be more but hopefully only a handful. Virtually all are elderly people in aged care rest homes. It's a scary time for others who are residents there.

On that point, looking at UK figures, to only include deaths in hospitals makes me think the figures there are much, much worse.

Thoughts are with you all, especially those who have family or friends affected.

Thing that concerns me mate, is we only did 1200 tests today throughout the country. I do wonder how many people possibly have symptoms of COVID but don't contact their GP for fear of having to take the time off work in quarantine (leave without pay if they are already working from home), or out of fear of possibly prolonging the lockdown.

I get your overall point though, we seem to be doing a bloody good job here compared to so many other countries. Ahem, America.

I hear you, but my concern is how quick we can trace contacts of those who are positive. Seems we are a bit behind others on that.

What's your thoughts on Jacinda? A true leader or "lip stick on a pig"?

Exactly
Median age of all deaths in the ROI is 81 , with 80% over 70 so age is a major factor
Mortality rates will vary with age. Unquestionably younger people are dying with this but the fatality rate will be much lower than for older people who contract the virus. The only way to properly estimate the CFR is mass testing or rather looking at a representative sample of cases from across the spectrum in terms of severity of symptoms. Only testing those unwell enough to go to hospital introduces an element of bias.

My worry is that the lockdown is basically just a way of buying time so that we have everything in place to deal with the situation but we are no further forward than we were 3 weeks ago.
Make no mistake if the government was told that we could come out of this thing with 25000 deaths and it would all go away they would snatch your hands.
People have been telling us for years that the NHS is on its knees (many of us have seen it at first hand) but the government has chosen to ignore it, the chickens are coming home to roost.
If we come through this and I mean if not when I think that we should all be prepared to pay 5% of our earnings into the NHS because if there is one thing this has shown us that the most important thing we have is our health.

The one good thing that I’m hoping that will come out of all this, is that the government will now see that under no circumstances should Trump be allowed anywhere near our NHS in any capacity whatsoever.

Irrelevant of the moral and social issues it would be political suicide.
