France confirmed lockdown continues to 11th May ;-( Then creches, schools etc back and maybe work in certain areas ;-( Risk categories have to stay in lockdown ongoing ;-( Masks will be needed to wear etc outside but not enough at moment ! Chance of group meetings etc for sports etc July !

Seems like a fair strategy, I suppose they will be building up the supplies and infrastructure to get what they will need after May 11th to be able to test everyone who is ill and with the lockdown of bars and cafes it should be easier to track who else they might hand made contact with.

At least that would give a fair indication of how future viruses can be tracked and traced in a similar way the South Koreans did.

We have 10,000 of our people killed by this virus, and you seem to think that holding the government of the day responsible for it is 'unfair'?

Holding the government to account is completely normal. Questioning their policies is completely normal. Advocating different policies is completely normal.

Calling out politicians and advisors as charlatans and murderers is not normal behaviour.

The truth is that there are a vast range of measures being used by countries but it doesn't mean they are all right or all wrong. Unfortunately we will only be able to really assess what was right and wrong way down the line with the aid of hindsight.

No need for politics in this situation. The public need to be responsible in their actions and our health workers need to be fully supported and then rewarded.

Read something before that stated Sweden have been doing "ok" by not following the method of lockdown.

Is this true or fake news?

According to the latest WHO numbers, they have 10,948 confirmed cases with 919 deaths, so under 10% mortality rate that the UK have (of confirmed cases of course).

They had 20 'new deaths' recorded today and 859 people in a critical condition.

With this instance, it's probably just gonna be a case of wait and see.

They were prepared for going this route though. They have a better healthcare system but also a lower population and have been practicing social distancing, just not full lockdown. Most importantly perhaps, they have been 'cocooning' their most vulnerable people.

Depending on which side of the argument you're on (I'm not really on any side, I just want it over with as soon as is safely possible but it is what it is) people are either using it as example of what should have been done or what shouldn't have been done. But until they're through it I suppose we can't know for sure.

looks like our lockdown is going to be extended by another 3 weeks

At least mate (are you in the UK)?

Macron confirmed earlier - not sure if it's been mentioned - that France will lift theirs on May 11th. Gatherings (or 'events open to the public' - whatever that means!) off until at least mid-July, though.

However, not sure if that May 11th is for a full lift all at once or if it's gonna be a gradual process from now to then or, from the 11th onwards.

Don’t know if anyone saw Channel 4 news earlier, I find their reporting of this the most honest and impartial in the UK.

Raised serious doubts about the validity of the UK governments reporting of RIP figures in particular and raised the issue of an Epidemic in nursing and care homes. These settings have accounted for up to 50% of the RIPs figures in other countries. Asking the very valid question of why the UK are not reporting these and other countries are. Interesting peice, I’m sure it will be up on their website later.
The last of the main TV channels in the UK that act like journos still

Everything is gonna be gradual pretty much everywhere you'd think. I still think it's better to do a long period of restrictions and risk doing too long than lift everything too soon and end up with a second prolonged period.

Upto 2,000 cancer referrals are being missed every week, referrals under the two week wait system for very serious diseases where suspected cancer patients are referred by GP's and supposed to be seen within a fortnight have fallen by up to 70 percent within the last month.

People are extremely reluctant to make crucial visits to hospital as resources are being centred all around the response to coronavirus. Its now feared this is having extremely dire consequences for people with other possibly fatal conditions unless caught early enough.

The concentration on Coronavirus is almost certainly having a hugely detrimental effect and health officials are apparently extremely concerned.

Yes, it is. And there has to be more perspective that all these efforts to 'save lives' is actually going to lead to more deaths. Not just here.

I'm not saying there's an alternative or anything. God knows.

So basically - an easing of the lockdown involves people risking their lives to do the things they don't really like doing - whilst still not being able to do the things they enjoy doing

Good luck selling that to the masses

Because we're not quite as right wing as the German government, and don't have a widespread private insurance element in our health service.

Surprised to find you're a fan of the market when it comes to health.

They also didn't start by including deaths of those with coronavirus. If people had serious underlying conditions and died after testing positive, they weren't initially being counted in the data.

I'm not sure if that's changed - I'm pretty sure I read somewhere last week that it had.

The first one is fine for the NHS, hence my number 2), We are self isolating anyway. If we create two levels of people, those with and those without the virus, there will be social problems. Ultimately we will all have it anyway, via immunity or vaccine. Testing 65,000,000 isn’t going to happen before the vaccine, even at 100,000 a day it would still take 2 years....I’m not sure it’s the way forward tbh....
My worry is that the lockdown is basically just a way of buying time so that we have everything in place to deal with the situation but we are no further forward than we were 3 weeks ago.
Make no mistake if the government was told that we could come out of this thing with 25000 deaths and it would all go away they would snatch your hands.
People have been telling us for years that the NHS is on its knees (many of us have seen it at first hand) but the government has chosen to ignore it, the chickens are coming home to roost.
If we come through this and I mean if not when I think that we should all be prepared to pay 5% of our earnings into the NHS because if there is one thing this has shown us that the most important thing we have is our health.

We're going to be in this state until at least mid-May you'd think, but that should - if the confirmed case rate flattens out and then starts to decline, which will happen before the death count declines unfortunately - be about right in terms of timing for the first wave/getting through the peak or whatever.

After that it's what's brought back and when.

Said before but any business that can work from home (which they now are doing) should be ordered to continue doing so. Most big companies (one of the ones freelance for, and I know Sky web-tech are from a friend who works there in Leeds) are gearing up for working from home for the next 3 months from now at least. Most jobs which are desk-based should continue this.

Small businesses etc could maybe start edging back. Slowly but surely. Maybe even stuff like Maccies (I never go like) or Starbucks etc allowed to reopen as drive-thru only. You just do it all gradually and gradually and get people to start spending again and people back to work when it's safe.

We have the 'benefit' of having Europe as a canary, with most of the countries between one and three weeks ahead of us. The UK need to see how they go about theirs and what successes (if any) they have etc.

You do realise that people have been paying at least 20% of their earnings already, thats money that SHOULD have been going towards the NHS , what im saying is, do you really want to give the tory rats another 5%?

Basically the 20% people pay in tax isnt being spent on what matters most.

It looks like the call you made was to accept the judgement of people that's led so far to the slaughter of 10,000 of our fellow citizens.

Mug.

They have a plan in place and so far the NHS isn't swamped. Every person who's caught the virus has been able to get treated. The government can't do more than make sure the health service isn't overun during a pandemic.

Accepting the ill thought out rantings of a poster on a forum would be much more foolish than to listen to medical experts but hey this is the twitter generation where a ton of conspiracy theorists don't even believe there is a virus, so don't let me stop you going way over the top with your criticism.
