Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

It's fairly straightforward ...

From https://www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/statistical-work-areas/covid-19-daily-deaths/ ( I've bolded the important stuff )

The spreadsheet for the NHS England deaths is on that site as well, and it's actually easier to see what it means by looking at the raw data.

Obviously this is the internet though, so there'll doubtless be conspiracy theories and accusations of incompetence being bandied about when the explanation is there in black and white for all to see.

Apologies if I'm being a bit dim, but I'm not sure I quite understand. The methodology you reference from NHS England suggests death stats should only be those confirmed as happening today, with the stats then updating as new data comes in, but the Guardian makes it sound like the daily stats are whenever deaths are able to be announced, even if that includes deaths that took place a week ago. Can they both be right or am I missing something?

"Of the 823 new hospital deaths announced today by NHS England, 115 occurred on 10 April while 695 took place between 1-9 April.

The remaining 12 deaths occurred in March, with the earliest new death taking place on 25 March."
Ok please respend to my post and not just inanely repeat yourself in bold. Deaths that happened today may not be reported for a week so the figures for today aren't accurate but may actually be low not high depending on how many actually die today. I don't get if you're trying to make a point that there's no as many dying as the figures say.

Be very careful with the dog stuff as @Donald Twain walks amongst us again.

But they arent saying the people have died today.

"As of 5pm on 10 April, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 9,875 have sadly died."

They are just giving us a daily report of how many deaths were registered today.

Just looked at the data in the spreadsheet, and daily from the 4-8th April the figures were around 650, which while they are likely to go up, they seem somewhat lower than the stats you see bandied around of around 1,000 per day?

The only point i'm trying to make is that they've made a right balls up in the way they're reporting these figures. I'm not suggesting that the figures are incorrect, but they are being reported in a muddled manner

When people hear that the number of deaths has increased by 917 since yesterday, it would fair to assume that those 917 people died yesterday - and that simply isn't the case

People seem to quote the likes of https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries though, which gives a daily figure of over 900, which is a good 300 below what NHS England says.

Ah, so the Guardian et al are taking cumulative readings at the end of each day, subtracting yesterday's figure from today's, and passing this off as a daily death toll?

No, Public Health England are providing death statistics to the government as and when they receive/can process it - Some of numbers being added to the total today actually died back in mid March

They're NHS England figures, so you need to add on Wales and Scotland, and NI too presumably.
Also, because the numbers in the spreadsheet show date of death, rather than date of publication, they'll be different anyway, but the numbers in the spreadsheet are probably, once they're backfilled, a better indication of the trend.

They're both "right" in as such as they reflect the way they're reported, but, if you want to know how many people died in England with COVID-19 on a given day, then the spreadsheet is the right number ( so long as you go back a week or so ). If you're just interested in a trend, then the headline figure is OK, but will almost certainly by misleading over weekends, when there are less admin staff around to keep the numbers up to date.

At least some good news :

The city of Shenzen is set to become the first Chinese city to ban the sale of live animals for food and ban the sale of dog and cat meat for consumption.

The ban takes effect on May 1st.

Let`s see whether the rest of China follows suit.
I was in China about 10 years ago on a factory visit and we were took to this restaurant where basically we were given a plate and walked down this line the size of a football pitch to pick what we wanted to eat , by the time I got to the end I had nothing on my plate .
All I saw was plate after plate of stuff that just looked totally inedible, I am not a fussy eater but I do prefer to see my dinner dead before I eat it
I have no axe to grind with the Chinese but when this is all over somebody has to be accountable.
