Are you guys feeling the Chinese threat in the UK like we feel it in Australia? There is a feeling that war is coming.

Yes. Someone is going to have a big bust up with China. They tried economic bullying Australia, they will undoubtedly try it on with the U.K. but will fail, they are trying it on militarily with everyone in the South China Sea and India. Then they will find out that they are just not quite big enough......

As a traveller, that's your loss, not theirs. I've been there a few times. It's the most amazing place I've ever been to...

After last years widespread civil disorder, it's no surprise they are toughening up. Are these punishments too much? Probably. There is a healthy middle ground to be found.

And what can 'the West' actually do? I read lots of comments stating that the West should stand up to China. But how?

HK or the China is "the most amazing place ive ever been to" ?

China are responding to widespread violent disorder, not peaceful protests. There must be a deterrent against what happened last year.

And the UK should be asking Hong Kong for advice on how to build a decent, safe, livable city. We are in no position to lecture HK or China. It's arrogant to think we know best and can lecture others.

Yeah you havent been to HK aside from perhaps a short tourist trip.

Must have been to China lol

If the US plaves sanctions on HK and depegs the HKD then China has massive problems.

$40bill gold reserves in april were down to $27 ish million (from memory) by june.

Remember they need $ more than anyone else needs RMB.

Ive heard 2 massive bets are on for the decoupling...

Cant mention names but 1 was in the film The Big Short ;)

Tories jumping on anti Chinease CCP sentiment, where have they been in the last decade, is it a case of being faux faux away galaxy in the hope Donald slips us one, it's pathetic in a chuckling way.

As I said, I've been multiple times. I have family there. First and foremost, I go to see my family. Tourism is a nice bonus. My shortest trip was two weeks, longest trip five weeks. I'm not an expert, but nor do I go for a two day stopover. And I talk to people when I'm there...family and friends, locals and expats...

I'm not quite sure what qualifies you to say that my opinions are right or wrong?

Quite frankly...... you, sir, are talking bollocks.

Quite right mate. Ive been taking the middle ground on China for a while - nothing but abuse from a group of new cold war advocates on here.

What are your thoughts and experience of the CCP, mate?

Eh? do you think being anti CCP in the wake of everything is a bad stance to take?

Yes I do, much of reeks of insincere opportunism. I don't actually believe our current and recent Governments or those here suddenly developing a conscience about the CCP activities give two hoots about who the Chinese CCP suppresses, they just hope Trump notices...

Respectfully I disagree. Having lived in HK for several years I’m of the opinion that the U.K. still feels a duty of care to the locals and almost regret their decision to build power plants in the new territories, which kind of snookered them when they had to hand it back as Kowloon and HK island (which were meant to be not China for perpetuity) would have had no power, plus we should have installed a democratic process in the 80s (which we almost did). There is also an sense of wanting from a lot of the Cantonese population who would prefer to be a British colony than their current arrangement (see a poll by the south China star paper IIRC).

Personally I think the world has become aware of their threat a little late. When a country builds islands out of nothing in order to claim the territory in the South China Sea the whole world should have been on them
