Well, I guess I won't be visiting HK, ever, unless by some miracle, the West actually grows a set of balls and deals with the CCP.

This law is effectively curbing free speech on the entire world. Come to think of it, every politician in the western world will be guilty and subjected to arrest once they step foot on China. How the west reacts now will determine China courage towards further domination of the entire region and eventually the world.

The CCP is busy creating a 'second world'. A world in which authoritarian governments reign supreme. It's frightening.

As a traveller, that's your loss, not theirs. I've been there a few times. It's the most amazing place I've ever been to...

After last years widespread civil disorder, it's no surprise they are toughening up. Are these punishments too much? Probably. There is a healthy middle ground to be found.

And what can 'the West' actually do? I read lots of comments stating that the West should stand up to China. But how?

1) Well, dur....
2) It's far too much. No probably about it.
3) Ultimately, it is built like a house of cards. A house that we've pretty much created, mind you.

there are existing law to deal with the unrest. This law went way above and beyond, design to curb criticism, to control speech, to kill off any form of protest(even peaceful one), to curb any opposition party to organise all peaceful movement, to strike fear on all hker that nothing except loyalty to the party is acceptable. Any democracy activist found speaking to foreign politician is enough to convict. Carrying foreign flag shouting slogans Is enough to send you away for life

it overwrites any existing laws that protects human rights. No bail, not able to see lawyer, infinite detention, secret trial.

is it too much? Definitely

China are responding to widespread violent disorder, not peaceful protests. There must be a deterrent against what happened last year.

And the UK should be asking Hong Kong for advice on how to build a decent, safe, livable city. We are in no position to lecture HK or China. It's arrogant to think we know best and can lecture others.

like I say violent protest can be punish by laws such as rioting, arson, affray, bodily harm, property damage. Non of them carry a life sentence and offenders can be sentence without stripping their basic rights.

this new law is design to curb speech and force obedience with harshest of punishment. They will be punish just because they disagree.

If we do not wish to be suppress by such law, why should hker? It’s not even arrogant, it’s sympathy.

I’m glad Boris has offered HK‘ers the opportunity to settle in the U.K.....

just browse through the hk protest forum, they’ve uncovered a number of hk police successful BNO application. Social media is such a wonder thing. The vetting process is not good enough.
