The Government wouldn't have the support needed if not for the violence at BLM, Sarah Everard & now Bristol + numerous other places during a global pandemic when large gatherings are ILLEGAL.

The rent a mob idiots have signed their own death warrant. I saw pictures of the Liverpool protesters and 90% looked about 17 - still getting their arses wiped by mum and dad what do they know about politics seriously its an excuse to get out the house and rebel against the rules as is the nature of teenagers.

Unfortunately they've gone and done it now and likely kicked lockdown further down the road and infected a few relatives in the process.

Forget a nice summer of freedom thanks to these clowns.
Again it amazes me the anger you have for 'the Left' far outweighs your anger for a government who are deliberately using the pandemic as a chance to push through legislation which curtails your freedom to hold the government to account, and therefore reduce protest to a merely performative charade

It now - in the eyes of many - will have justification though, won't it?

"What do we want?"

"The right to non-violent protests!"

"How are we going to get it?"

"By violently protesting!"

But there was a peaceful protest about it last week.

If people want to play strawman to validate their point that’s up to them.

Surely most people can see these protest aren’t a symbol of the real issue and that issue is with the government.

That’s certainly how it will be spun, but there’s nothing in the Bill that would deal with what we saw yesterday. It already is severely illegal, with lengthy prison terms.

Good, hope they’re dished out

also, don’t even think it really needs spinning (though agree with you it will be spun that way on top of it)

they’ve just proved a point - that people are w*****s.

the spin in terms of “this is why we need this Bill”, which some of the cretinry have already started on

I fully agree.

But those peaceful protests don't make headlines.

What makes headlines is people breaking the law.

Regardless of what's in that bill, as @tsubaki says, what happened is illegal. In any form. You can't go round smashing things up.

Also, as it stands, mass gatherings aren't allowed because we're in a pandemic, and plenty of people have been told they have to just suck up losing their livelihoods, businesses, jobs etc because well, that's just what has had to be given up.

But surely they cannot let anarchy and chaos run wild at the best of times, most definitely not in the midst of an extremely dangerous pandemic.

It seems that there was a peaceful protest at the beginning of last night but then a few hundred broke off and headed to the police station area and let loose. Same with the Sarah Everard gathering, initially peaceful gathering but then a core began to agitate. Same with the BLM gatherings.

Right now, nobody should be attending a mass gathering.

So even if they were 'peaceful', if they were in a gathering, I don't care. Get rid of them. They aren't allowed. You can protest in other ways than having to gather during a pandemic.

In a month or so's time, go gather to your hearts' intent because it's allowed.

Gatherings and protests are two entirely different things.

Currently, gatherings aren't allowed.

That new bill is disgusting because it is trying to stamp down on peaceful protests.

However, they'll use what happened last night - which is people breaking both lockdown rules and the actual law before this bill anyway - as justification for it.
