So what has made the government decide to bring these in, like now, a particular protest?
Something must of been the final straw, or rather something has handed the government the excuse they needed to justify this, if it was the right wing anti lockdown pricks they have really made things difficult for people with a legitimate reason to protest.

The extinction rebellion protests are the predominate reason I believe.

Heres an idea - why didn't the government wait until after the pandemic to bring this in? The police already have similar powers under covid legislation.

This government wants a police state its clearly obvious.

How do people not realise that saying “wait until after the pandemic to protest” is exactly the reason why these protests unfortunately need to go ahead now. The government are forcing the hand of the population into demonstrating. Admittedly, you don’t need to tip over police vans and attack officers to make the point, but you can’t just not protest things which the government tries to usher in using the pandemic as a defence shield. It is nefarious and these measures are not for the good of society. If protests are delayed until after the bill has passed because of the pandemic then it becomes a bit too late to take a stand.
Unfortunately for the rest of us, the behaviours of those that know better than the rest of us have legitimised putting the conversation about stopping these lockdown protests on the table.

These protesters have enabled this situation, end of.

The Government is obviously opportunistic and using events to try and push through additionally authoritarian legislation but the people who have taken part in mass gatherings and protests have played right into their hands.

Climate change, BLM, far right, raves, women's rights, anti-lockdown, protest legislation... all during a pandemic where people are in lockdown watching people dying daily. It's reached saturation point and I think a large portion of society would scarily now be willing to sign away protest rights/right to gather just to get people to try and maintain Covid safety, end lockdown and try and get a degree of normality back into their lives.

If you have supported any protest or mass gathering during lockdown then you are part of the problem that has led to this breaking point with the potential erosion of our legal rights. The Government was always going to try something like this given the chance, it's like sticking your hand in a tiger's cage and complaining when he bites you.

Spot on. If we had had a fully observed lockdown without these idiots rioting whenever they got the chance it would have been very difficult for the government to justify the related measures in this bill. There would have been zero rationale to support any such action. Sadly the minority of cretins have most certainly enabled this.

I'm all for protests. It's part of democracy.

Problem is if it becomes counter productive they end up fueling what they're protesting against.

There's a daft Communist bill coming through to stop/minimise protesting. Then 3 protests happen that basically boost the governments idea that it's the right call.

Doesn't help having a weak as piss opposition to the Tories either.

I havnt looked much into this law any chance of an idiot quite to the main points of contention?
A lot of it is minor stuff like setting time limits, keeping noise down and not being a public nuisance. But they also want to control things like sit ins etc. The biggy for me which is dangerous is that it gives the Home Secretary some powers of law changing that would previously have had to go through Parliament. That sets a very dangerous precedent

I see that Nazi propagandist skid-mark Andy Ngo has been desperately trying to blame it all on BLM and the AntiFA.
The Braindead Trumpist Proud Boy Buffoons who follow him are lapping it up, saying it shows up everything that is wrong in America.

If one person complains of noise or inconvenience, then the Police can shut down a protest. Maximum sentence 10 years.
Also requires all those in Traveller communities to carry a special "Traveller passport" which must be shown to the police on request, failure is an offence.

I think it's aimed at the sit ins in London last summer that caused chaos.

Just googled him and a video of a woman with her pants down in front of the cops popped up, wish I hadn't bothered now:(
