Big Club

It was a little odd like.

I know. I sometimes tend to forget I am talking to people on this instead of being conscious of the fact that I have to make sense in terms of how other people will read it.

Back to the fan base thing. Everton geographically is the closest club to Ireland and had great success in the 80's. Ironically if it was not for Liverpool I'd say there would be much more Irish Evertonians. I have to make sense in terms of how other people will read it.

It's about the narrative, if you care about the ****ing narrative. When cups are raised and we rush home, or better to Goodison, to catch the Wednesday match against Dortmund, the narrative has the opportunity to expand to include Everton. It is what it is. Talking about what makes a "big club" is just playing their game.

To quote a famous American sportsman, "just win, baby". The rest takes care of itself. The challenge is getting from here to there, without a sheik's load of money to spunk all over the joint ala Citeh. I have heard opinions expressed that BK and his board lack the nous to execute this sort of move. Living with Bobby is keeping it interesting and fun. They hired him. You can draw your own conclusions.

"Big club" talk is not fun. Just let it happen.

If I were cynical, I would mention that in retrospect it's amazing how Everton manged to keep Moyes up all these years, from all the present evidence. Perhaps it's a "bigger" club than it gets credit for.

What do you think a Big Club is?

More supporters? More trophies? European Success?

just wanted to get quite a few opinions as I've heard loads of people say we aren't a big club and loads saying the opposite.

Does your team elicit within you great passion, devotion, impossible loyalty and esprit de corps? ......If your answer is 'YES', then YOU support a 'Big Club'

History & Fanbase makes you a big club... We are up there with Liverpool, United Arsenal & maybe your spurs, Newcastle's

I'm not ruling out Chelsea & City, but they have bought their individual "big club" title! Sadly you can buy it these days... that doesn't mean they deserve it! Unfortunately football was only invented in 1992 to some people, so clubs like us lose out

Get what you're saying mate. True Everton had won more than Arsenal and United before the Premier League era but before the late 60s Everton were much more successful than Liverpool - for all the RS talk of their 'history' - it was basically a 20-25year period. Go back further and Arsenal were known as the biggest team, Bank of England club and all that.

There is luck or coincidence or foresight or call it what you will, but United were lucky that when they peaked in the 90s money in football was taking off big time. They had the foresight to start developing their stadium early on.
Liverpool have spunked millions since the Premier League began..their money from their millions of global fans are to an extent because people in Europe grew up watching then in the 70s / 80s but in Asia I bet very few did. It sounds mental but I reckon part of the support comes from the fact that Chinese people and Asian people get off on the colour red..and I bit of clever marketing with the whole YNWA rubbish, and their Istanbul win brought in a few too. It's not all down to the club and the players 'earning' success. We of course were unlucky in that our best recent years coincided with the Heysel ban and at that point there was little money in football.

City and Chelsea may have bought it - but to an extent Liverpool and United have too. Their commercial clout comes from things way removed from what the players do.

Trophies and History are what defines a big club for me.
However, this Premier League era has brainwashed people into think that if you spend ridiculous amounts of money, then you're a big club. The likes of Spurs and Newcastle, Chelsea and City are classed as 'Big' because they do nothing but spend ridiculous amounts of money, but those Clubs can only dream of winning what Everton have won, okay, they might do eventually, but right now, those four teams mentioned aren't bigger than Everton, despite what SKY or BT Sport want you to believe.

It is a matter of perception, the age of the majority of footie fans now would probably place them as been not born or very younger when we were boss in the 80s and earlier.

Anyway we are a big club and always will be, it is down to us to keep it that way and pass on the mantel to the younger fans and those to come.

It's a complete non-issue. I don't care whether people think Everton is a big club and I don't care whether they are. You support your team. Are Everton fans better than Stockport fans because the club they were born near or saw first or liked the colour of the kit more, wins more games or trophies?
They support their team with a much passion as the average fan of any other club. Football is about joining with your community to support your shared team. Doesn't matter even slightly if other people view it as within the realms of the arbitrary definition of Big Club or Big Four
