Big Club

Newcastle a sleeping giant ffs, they haven't won a major trophy since 1955 or something - that's at least a coma.

In my view, we are the biggest and best sports club on the planet. Don't care if we haven't won anything for nearly 19 years, I have supported Everton since the second I was born, 44 years ago. I couldn't see myself caring about any other sports team's fortunes, all I care about is my own team, and its fans, who are also the best in the world.

Everyone else can just wish they supported a club like EFC.

Chelsea's away end v Boro in the FA cup last year looked empty. Yes it was a midweek game and far away but we would've sold it out

That was one game mid week in the cup though. Just to make it clear, I think our numbers considering the success of both clubs in the last 5 years even, piss all over Chelsea's but I was just pointing out that they do sell out nearly everywhere these days, and have done this season. They have had help with travel costs this season though.

I heard people ****ging Sunderland off the other week for not bringing the full allocation, even though they are bottom of the league. People's memories seem to be a bit confused as I remember there being a mass of empty seats in our away end when we went there in 2005 and Cahill got the last minute winner.

Maybe this year while they are having a go, not for a number of years thoughChelsea don't travel at all mate, can't even remember the last time they filled out Goodison let alone the lower teams. Don't you remember them bringing about 500 for the league cup semi final afew years back. Arsenal the same they take about 1500 regulars everywhere no more than that, obviously they sell out now there doing well. West Ham are the only proper football supporters in London and even they don't travel in great numbers anymore

You seem to be slightly over exaggerating here. Chelsea filled the away end in the past 2 seasons for a start. And they didn't bring 500. Think it was 4,000 which I agree was a poor effort considering they could have had 6,000. We would have taken 6,000.

Think you're completely wrong about Arsenal. They sell out everywhere and have been taking massive numbers away for years.

You must have been at a different game to me then. If you really want to believe Arsenal have got this great away support you do so mate. It is quite common knowledge that southern teams do not travel aswel

We are big. Liverpool are bigger. Man united are bigger than them. Newcastle are smaller. Spurs are about the same.

I'd rather be a bluenose with 2000 people through the gates and no trophies than any other prick of a football fan.

That's a brilliant post from young Nik. Strangely ...

What do you think a Big Club is?

More supporters? More trophies? European Success?

just wanted to get quite a few opinions as I've heard loads of people say we aren't a big club and loads saying the opposite.

I believe the term big club is just a relative measure, how can you draw a line where clubs above that are big and those below are not.

I mean to a Leeds fan Luton Town are not big but to a club playing in the Isthmian league they are massive.

Took me a while to sort this out (couldn't find it elsewhere). Records here aren't absolute (begins in 1889 for League and FA Cup). Thought some of you may find this interesting to see in one table. This is only clubs that have won the league. (sorry for format, will try to fix)

Club League Winner FA Cup Winner League Cup Winner
Manchester United 20 11 4
Liverpool 18 7 9
Arsenal 13 10 2
Everton 9 5 0
Aston Villa 7 6 4
Sunderland 6 2 0
Chelsea 4 7 4
Newcastle United 4 6 0
Sheffield Wednesday 4 4 1
Manchester City 3 5 2
Wolverhampton 3 4 0
Blackburn Rovers 3 3 1
Leeds United 3 1 1
Huddersfield Town 3 1 0
Tottenham Hotspur 2 7 4
Portsmouth 2 2 0
Preston North End 2 2 0
Burnley 2 1 0
Derby County 2 1 0
West Bromich Albion 1 5 1
Sheffield United 1 3 0
Nottingham Forest 1 2 4
Ipswich Town 1 1 0

see, that's when you realize we could do so much worse than Kenwright. Really, we could.

Ashley and Newcastle are a farce but to be honest I find the criticism of "expectations" to be a bit silly.

The only legitimate expectation is to try to win every game. All the rest is fake corporate BS. Its a simple game really. The best and fittest 11 go on the park and try to win. Some clubs have more expensive more highly paid 11s and "expect" to win more often. That's all that can be said. In saying a top 10 finish would meet expectation they are being realistic.

I think the term "big club" is a misused word in these days.

There are many group of clubs:

Biggest clubs: Manchester United and Liverpool
Big clubs: Arsenal, Chelsea
Big-ish clubs: Spurs and Manchester City
Sleeping giants: Everton, Aston Villa, Newcastle United

Errrrrrr Everton football club are bigger than Chelsea. That wouldnt have even been in doubt before 2003. Id say we're up there with Arsenal, its only Arsenal who have won more titles than us.
