Best everton player this century?

Rooney is just like Cantona. very good player at club level crap at international level against the very best.

Cantona retired from the international scene in his early 20s after fighting with the French board. Crap comparison.

Arteta or Baines for me if we're talking about how they played in an Everton shirt, otherwise Rooney if overall.

Don't know where you got this from mate but Zidane only ever won the Champions League once, Messi has won it 3 times and will win more before his career finishes. Zidane has also only ever won 3 league titles compared to Messi's 5. I know that Zidane has international honours but Messi will still have at least 2 world cups left in him to do something and will have a few more Copa America's as well.

Regarding the question in the OP, I would go with Baines.

Messi is in arguably the best "team" put together ever. Thats why his has so many duplicate winning medals.

What the lad is saying is Messi has failed to win international trophys. Argentina is a good group of players yet they dont gel enough to win things and Messi just isnt the same player without a Barcelona shirt on. On the world stage and club stage Zidane could take tge game by the scruff of the neck and just paint pictures all the over the pitch. Messi cant seem to do this at international level. So is he really the greatest ever? No. Not proved it on tge biggest stage yet. Ala Zidane, Pele, Maradona.

Hes also only played for the one club.

Zidane however has won every trophy available to him. At club & international level. He won trophys at every club he played for.

I'm sorry but there just is no comparison. The one dimensional dribbling Leo Messi has nothing on ZIZI, The artist.

The best player I've ever seen.

Baines for me. Rooney has probably done more overall but not in an Everton shirt. Arteta a close third.

As for the Messi/Zidane debate. Worth remembering Messi is still only 25 and has already achieved so much. plenty of time to do lots more.

Zidane for me. I can totally agree with everyone who says Messi is technically better but I got more excited about watching Zidane play than I ever will about watching Messi.

Rooney was on fire in an Everton shirt and he gets my vote.

Out of Messi or Zidane, I'd choose Zidane, I'd just rather have that type of all round midfielder, rather than some little Latin guy nutmegging everyone upfront!

That's because we are used to seeing messi scoring hatricks every game and lobbing the keeper for fun just because he feels like it.

This threads going well, nearly three pages of international banter in response to a question about Everton. Baines for me, would have said Rooney if he'd stayed longer.

If you can find out what this film is called and find it with some subtitles you can read too, i highly recommend watching it:

Documenting Zizou's last game for Real a few months before the final. Real intimate look in at his personality, life and family. Terriffic stuff, and in fact really wins me over in regards to "the best footballer" thing.

One can always discuss greatness at varying conditions: did he score more or win more trophies or whatever, but for me it's all about the culture and aesthetics of it - after all, football is culture as much worthy of a museum as a found-art-pisspot. And in terms of creating history, beauty in football and of course drama, Zidane gets that nod in front of most other 21st century footballers.
