Documenting Zizou's last game for Real a few months before the final. Real intimate look in at his personality, life and family. Terriffic stuff, and in fact really wins me over in regards to "the best footballer" thing.

One can always discuss greatness at varying conditions: did he score more or win more trophies or whatever, but for me it's all about the culture and aesthetics of it - after all, football is culture as much worthy of a museum as a found-art-pisspot. And in terms of creating history, beauty in football and of course drama, Zidane gets that nod in front of most other 21st century footballers.
*Amen brother

The answer to the thread is Rooney. If we were talking about the most "influential" Everton player this century, it'd be a different answer, but Rooney is far and away the best.

I said Baines but are we going on how they did for Everton or just how good they were at some point in their career. If it is the second Gascoigne must be a shout?

....saw Rooney as a 15 year old playing in the Blues Lancashire League U18s side and he was 'wow' then. The lad will probably win 100 international caps and he's the best we've had for many a year.

What now? Does the clique disapprove?

Did you see Zidane play for Bordeaux taking them to a uefa cup final? or when he played for juventus winning champions leagues, real madrid winning champions leagues, winning european championships in 2000 - his performance against spain the quarters or in the world cup 06 agaisnt spain and brazil UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!

GREATEST PLAYER IVE EVER SEEN

All you can say is that both are/were the greatest players of their generation. That's the highest compliment that you can ever say about anyone.

Zidane was the undoubtedly the player of his generation. In my opinion he was the best footballer I've ever seen.
He almost single-handedly beat Brazil on in the 2006 world cup quarter final when he was 34.

Messi is the player of his generation. He's the most prolific goalscorer that we've ever seen, and has technical ability that no one else can match.

Personally Zidane is my favourite because to me he encapsulates the spirit of the beautiful game. There will always be great players with huge technical ability, speed and power, but what set Zidane apart was his artistry and elegance on the ball.

good post.

Hard one this. During the season of 2002/2003 Rooney played some unbelievable stuff and got us to the top 7 almost single handedly. His final year with us when we finished 17th, his appetite seemed to wane (probably knew he was going to be sold). However baines has consistently played well for us since he broke into the side and in the last 2 years has probably been the best full back in the premier league (any club would want him). For his loyalty and consistency I'm going for baines!

Subjective I know but Platini used to do the same in the Eighties.....love him or hate him now..he was in his day one of the most elegant and clever players I ever saw play the game.

Zidane could win a game by himself and was the one player you wanted in a final or a big game.

But Messi wins games every week, Zidane was never anywhere near that consistent.

I think Zidane at his best was a better player but Messi's average performance would be higher.
