For me this answer depends on whether Baines wants to go or not. If he was happy to stay i'd keep him. Don't want him here if he can't give 100% though.

It's a difficult question is this one. For the last three or four years, i've thought that everything comes from Baines playing well and we'd be terrible if he left. However, in recent games, I've felt we've coped without him and have not failed as cataclysmically as I had expected us to do so. I'm much more comfortable with him leaving for a big transfer fee now then I was say two years ago, put it that way.

Interesting how evenly divided fans seem to be on this.
I'll be ecstatic if he stays. He's world class, brilliant, humble, and one of ours.
But I'm very much viewing that as less than likely, and I imagine he will be sold. Hope the fans are given a proper opportunity to say goodbye to him at Goodison if that is the case. Don't see this one being a particularly bitter goodbye to him if he does leave. Sad, most definitely, but not bitter- he's just been such a great player and evertonian.

Thing is if we sell him and get 16 to 20 mill we would still have to replace him.

Buying English or prem based (not that there's much option other than Shaw who the saints won't sell) will be massively inflated.

So you'd end up spending the bulk of it on that person. go foreign and who knows its a gamble but i suppose you could upgrade another position also.

but if we are happy he stays, he is happy if he stays then i'd keep him. sure who knows we are having a decent season we could surprise them and finish in the top 4 (wishful thinking of course) and he will get his bite at Champions League football.

Also the age thing annoys what does it matter what age he is. Look at Distin. Paulo Maldini played at LB up until he was 35 36 and was immense.

Plenty of modern day footballers continue great careers well into their 30's.

The only other league I really have good knowledge of besides the Prem is MLS, and I can't think of *anybody* that would fit the bill to replace him (read: young, talented, ready to move to the big stage).

LB is one of those specialty positions that's harder to fill.

Certainly no one in mls....

But if we get him for say £8M that's £12M to spend on a midfielder.

Not as insulting as Utd's offer for Baines and Fellaini but wiould probably be treated in the same way if we offered 8 million.

Southampton have less need to sell than us. He's a rapidly improving young English player at a club with a groqwing reputation for producing/nurturing talent.

Look how arsenal have struggled trying to find a LB to compete with Gibbs. I still think in Oveido we'v got someone who has the potential to be as close as a replacement to Baines as your gonna find. Bertrand maybe at Chelsea. Luke shaw looks very good but there's no chance of that deal!

Unless Baines is actively wanting to move on then keep at all costs.

We would need to look abroad for a LB if baines go, LBs are too expensive in this country.

I don't want him to go, but realistically I think he will if an acceptable offer comes in. He's been great for us and I wouldn't begrudge him getting some Champions League football and showing off his talents on the European stage, obviously if he sticks around until next season we'll be playing Champions League ourselves anyway so there's that I guess....

I cannot say yes too selling our only world class player, [Poor language removed] money, we sell baines and it sets a precedent that we are there to sell if you tickle our bollox long enough.

Also we won't get Lukaku although I honestly believe he may be sold on/loaned out again, I don't think he's technically good enough just yet, for playing top end of the CL, just my opinion. He's a beast like and I love him and I think he'll be available again in the future..

Replacing Baines will not be easy as some seem to think.

See this is kind of how I feel, but the problem is if he has no intention of signing a new contract (and I don't know one way or another if he does) then do we let the contract run down and him leave for nothing, just to make a point? I'm not sure our current financial state allows us to do that. If he says he wants to go and they tabled £16m then I'd sell him.
