See this is kind of how I feel, but the problem is if he has no intention of signing a new contract (and I don't know one way or another if he does) then do we let the contract run down and him leave for nothing, just to make a point? I'm not sure our current financial state allows us to do that. If he says he wants to go and they tabled £16m then I'd sell him.

If he wants to go then we are buggered really. If Man Utd are offering Evra a bumper new contract, why do they need baines?

Maybe as cover for when Suarez inevitably chews most of Evras limbs off and plants a burning cross in the middle of Old Trafford?

Manchester United manager David Moyes has said he will only look to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window if the right player becomes available.

"Only if the right players are available," he said. "They have to be able to fit into our squad. We would like to but there are no guarantees."

Moyes attempted to prise left-back Leighton Baines out of Goodison Park without success and his successor as Everton manager, Roberto Martinez, has already said another attempt would be pointless. "If they are determined to hold on to him then he can't be going anywhere," said Moyes.

Very snotty.

3.5 million notes per year he got. Unreal.

If you don't want Leighton Baines to stay then Everton isn't for you.

If Leighton Baines doesn't want Leighton Baines to stay at Everton, then Everton's not for him.

Would love to keep him, but if he wants to go then I'd allow it for the right price. No point if his heart ain't in it.

But hopefully, that isn't the case.

I am honestly shocked at the result of the poll. It is only a few months since this would be viewed as heresy, but 40% in favour of a sell...wow

A lot of it is based on the idea that he wants to go. If he wants to, you get kind of used to the idea and suddenly much more inclined to cash in and reinvest. Sad that we can't hold onto our icons these days but that's the way it is, it seems. If we can get good money for him, we have to think that, given our finances, selling might be for the best.

A lot of it is to with his age, the figures being spoken about for the sale of a left back, and it looking like he hasn't been as effective under Martinez' system so far.

I love the guy to bits, he is amazing, but consider these two things:
I ) he's 29 in two weeks and possibly wants to go soon;
II ) for 16m we can buy a more than decent replacement and be with some money left in the kitty to get another player in. Or, if Oviedo is good there - buy/try to buy Lukaku, or something.

I believe Martinez has a plan for this situation either way, and we won't end up with a dud*.

*Awaits Kone being given as an example.
