We've already rejected £15m twice. If they come up with something like £20m and it's really what Baines wants then fair enough. We're in the driving seat and the more that Moyes struggles the more desperate he will become.

At the beginning of the season I would have said hell no, but now I'm kind of wondering.

It seems like Baines' offensive ability (his biggest strength over a replacement LB) just isn't as important or useful in the Martinez system.

Besides those two screaming free kicks vs West Ham earlier, what has he done in the attacking half? Staunch defense is great, but you can get that for less money, too.

Sell and get another striker and/or CM? I think I'd take it.

Take his goals against West Ham out, and he's done very little this season. It feels almost as though we're being consciously prepared for his departure - even though that's daft.

Is it though?

You're a manager and you've just signed on with a foreign club. You have two "media darling" players. One is a well-liked and talented footballer, but doesn't get too much media attention because he's also a foreigner. The other is not only a member of the domestic national team (and everything that entails), but is also beloved by the fans as well. Neither of them, though, really fit well into your new planned system.

One of the richest clubs on the planet wants both. They make an [insulting] offer. Refuse very publicly and negatively. Take control of the bargaining. In the end, sell them only the well-liked foreign player (don't want to anger the fans too much this early), and wait for the other darling to "prove" that he just isn't as effective in the new system.

Now comes January. Negotiate the offer with super-rich club again, now that the aforementioned club is desperate and is ready to spend big. You're now less likely to get blowback from the supporters now that your other darling has a limited highlight roll.

End result? You had to wait a few months, but you now even more money than you would have otherwise to rebuild the club in your image, and the natives/Evertonians aren't even that arsed about it.

I think that's a little too Machiavellian. It doesn't make sense to ensure a player you want to sell is under performing. If you want to sell them, you want to make sure the buying club sees the value.

Don't go Baines please don't go.
