Im suprised it isnt higher than that, my thinking is that if the player wants to go, and the silence surrounding the entire thing leads me to believe he does want to leave, then well id rather have 16m than a player who has his heart set of playing for another team.

My opinion would change in a heartbeat if he came out and stated he wants to stay though

It's Leighton Baines. The man has class and has never made a fuss in the press. Never. I wouldn't expect him to do so now either. Plus with the club doing so well...not sure he wants to go. I wouldn't sell him.

I wonder what impact if any, us beating utd on wednesday should it happen will have on baines desire to move to that lot ;p, valid point imo

very much this!

hypotetically speaking...we wouldnt be getting £20m like some seem to think here..i guess it would be around £13-15m.
Anyways, dont sell. Sign a new one Bainesy!

Agree, but mate if he wants to leave id rather he did, in the financial position we are in we cant be saying no to 15-16m for a 29yo who wants to leave us, note thats IF he actually does want the move personally, if he doesnt then keep the bst lb in the country imo

It's all down to baines IMO. If he wants to go and won't sign a new contract then we need to sell. Would rather he signed a new contract and we could tell Manu to do one though.

I don't want to sell him but good things all come to an end and a handsome fee is what we need for any outgoing players at this club. He won't command such a fee in very near future.

I was relieved about this situation this week due to Moyes' defeatist quote and Oviedo's excellent performance, as i'd love to keep Bainesy. He's my favourite player and simply the most alright bloke in football.

The cynical economical side of me says that a sale would be a positive thing, though. It all depends on what he would want. If he doesn't have a new contract come january 31st then we get rid.

Not sure going to OT would be a good move for him. Would he be second fiddle to Evra or Evra second fiddle to him. I think Evra would be very unhappy.

I am too, to be honest. It's certainly nothing anti-Baines, it's more the opinion that Martinez can improve the team more by losing Baines and gaining the money than he could if he keeps Baines and loses the kitty.

His contract runs out summer 2015. So a statement from the man himself, or at least his manager, would go some way to help debates like this. If what Stubbs said was true, that Baines was disappointed not to join Man U in the summer, then you can understand most of those yes votes.

Sell, at £16.5m+ if he really implied he wanted to leave for Man Utd. Only if Martinez has ways to strengthen squad with the money, whilst keeping some towards a Lukaku bid.

Also it's probably me feeling overly sensitive, but got unresolved feelings to Osman's apparent need to motivate Baines with the fantasy football thing, and him seemingly reacting to give more because of that. Baines is brilliant but has a price-tag.

Matey the fantasy football stuff was all said in jest, don't look to deeply into it.

16m would be brilliant business for a LB of his age. Oviedo looks like he can fill Baines' boots which sort of seals it. Without Lukaku in the team next year I think we'll struggle. The money would be better used up front instead of left back. Of course, this is all very sad because Baines is a hero but all good things must come to an end
