About 20 people have died mate. The sheer amount of bushland in oz - combined with drought...there are bushfires every season, but this is 10 times worse.

Not sure you really understand the scale of the country.
And how many animals have died over there 3 million.

Please please please stay safe mate.

how come they failed to stop this already? one of the richest countries in the world, can't understand. and we were mocking Brazil for amazon fires..

awful, hopefuly noone is harmed.
This isn't just a local park burning that just needs a couple of fire engines. There are over 100 different fires burning, and an area larger than belgium has been completely destroyed. The fires are so big that the smoke is covering the sky in New Zealand. Some people in NZ have said they can actually smell the smoke, not just see it. Can you imagine being in Liverpool and being able to see and smell smoke from a fire in Romania? That would have to be a pretty big fire.

A lot of the towns being affected have only 1 road in and out, they are not easy to get to, especially if that road is on fire. We do have water bombing planes and helicopters, but the fires are spread from WA to the pacific ocean - a distance of more than 3000 kms so they can't be everywhere at once.

Gum trees are full of eucalyptus oil which is highly flammable, it is not unknown for trees to literally explode in bushfires. The fires are so large and so ferocious that they actually create their own weather system. Think for a moment how big a fire has to be to actually change the weather.

Most of the bush outside the towns is extremely dense and there can be areas larger than Liverpool without a single road or any means to get close. All you can do is let the fire burn through 50kms of bush until it reaches a point that you can fight it. Then just as you are in place and ready for it, the wind changes and it heads in a completely different direction (remember it creates it's own weather system so is very unpredictable).

Being from the uk, I had no idea how big a bushfire could actually be. Now that I live here, I have no idea how they actually manage to bring them under control.

My parents were discussing this tonight. Apparently the thermal cameras are picking up hot objects such as cars in the sun and it is making it look worse than it is. Also people were arrested for setting some of the fires, so that means any suggestion that the scale of this is global warming related is bogus. There are actually two different worlds now.

I read that there have been 180+ arsonists arrested.

The thermal cameras probably are picking up hot cars, but in a firefront 50kms long, a warm car really is quite insignificant lol As I mentioned above, an area larger than Belgium has been totally destroyed. If it makes you feel better, we can start referring to it as the size of Belgium minus 1 car?

I really don't see how someone starying a fire can be proof that climate change is bogus though, care to elaborate as to how you achieved that conclusion?

I forgot to mention my family is filled with Trump voters. I think what I said makes more sense in that context.

It does or used to rain here in queensland in the summer, which does two things makes it grow but dampens it down so that it is safer to do planned fire break clearence burns.
Queensland had a 7yr drought thst ended in the floods of 2011.
The whole of Vic NSW and Qld ( think of an area east of the Mississippi from Miami to Canada) is 4 yrs into this one.

Any way back to the lack of rain. If there's no rain next summer those green shoots don't stay green...and harder to burn, they die off and carpet the floor with tinder, this year, next year and the next.

Then you have Eucalyptus leaves, natures own little oil soaked firelighters...one spark - pouf up she goes.

If you've ever thrown a small amount of paraffin, say half a cup on a fire, well a hand full of Eucalyptus leaves has the same effect.

Climate change, its a thing, it probably is. It causes extremes in weather
But Australia is a land of extremes any way. You add in cut backs, copy cat arsonists. Lightening strikes in unreachable, except by helicopter places...which can mean 5km from a 6 lane motorway, 50km from brisbane...add in a stiff wind and its burn baby burn.
And there you have it.
