A Case for the Defence

I think it's impossible to judge many of the criteria you've listed until a little further down the line. Obviously at this moment in time we have Lukaku, Barkley etc who are huge assets, but many people are worried we may lose some of those assets due to our onfield performance. It's difficult to know whether we will be able to adequately replace those players if that happens, and in Lukaku's case I personally think that will be almost impossible.

I've used the example before on here of Arsenal's youngsters 7 or 8 years ago. They were supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but the team hasn't progressed since then. Nasri, Fabregas and Clichy left, Gibbs and Walcott never really made it to the very top bracket, and Bendtner, Denilson and Djorou fell by the wayside. Arsenal fans (and the media) believed they were going to be the team to beat for the next 10 years, but it hasn't panned out that way.

Newcastle were another side in the early 2000s who believed they were on the up. They were playing in the Champions League under Bobby Robson, and he genuinely believed he had a great young side. Jenas, Bellamy, Given, Bramble and Dyer may not seem like big names now, but they were hot property at that point. I even remember Moyes saying that the Newcastle model was one he wanted to emulate when he took over. Needless to say, their optimism was badly misplaced.

Things can change quickly in football. Last summer I wanted us to keep hold of Stones and told everybody who would listen that there was no point in selling him because he'd be worth even more in 12 months time. It's starting to look like I was wrong about that, and it is worth noting that the progress of both Stones and Deulofeu has not run smoothly so far. While they're both ludicrously talented, I am slightly concerned that they're not learning quickly enough, and while the manager's patience and willingness for them to make mistakes undoubtedly has it's plus points, I also think they might need a little bit more guidance and a mix of carrot and stick to ensure they progress as much as they can.

We've long had a strong youth set up, and I don't think too much has changed in that regard over the past few years. Martinez appears to take more interest in the youth sides, but less youngsters get called into the squad, so it's a little bit of swings and roundabouts on that front. We all have high hopes for Dowell, Walsh etc, but let's not forget that we had the same hopes for Baxter, Kissock and Green.

The style of play is another difficult one, in that i'm not sure we've really got as much of an identity as we might think. We started off as a side wanting to dominate possession, but have morphed into a team better on the counter. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what Martinez views as his ideal set up or style. Most sides with a defined style of play have similar players throughout their squad, because the manager wants to replace like for like and have competition. I'm not sure we really have that, with Mirallas, Cleverley and Kone sharing the left sided duties this year but all playing in totally different styles. We were heavily linked with Yarmolenko to play that role but signed Niasse, a player who couldn't be much more different if he tried.

TL; DR Jury's out.

Begs the question where would we be with with 2 "win at all cost top draw players " and i mean Top Draw , in the squad.
This will change now with our new Iranian Overlord , mess up the rest of the season Bobby & you may not be around to find out.
I for one see a very bright future and really do hope Martinez is part of it .Just hope he doesnt give Moshiri a decision to make before then.

He'll get that chance, no question.

The fumage means very little to the hierarchy of this club. They know instinctively that it goes away again after another win or two.

The club owners see the bigger picture. The fans see the last 90 minutes. Never more has that been the case than in the aftermath of that game last Saturday.

There will be no dramatic change. And thank goodness, because this feller has come in and shown us how to play open play footy again instead of the dross of the last decade and half of eking out results from feeding off set piece scraps. You dont get rid of managers like that just because some players haven't got the bottle to defend in the last 10 minutes.

There is way way more good than bad brought to the table by RM - and the club decision makers know that.

Despite what some of Roberto’s more stalwart supporters (davek) might say, I don’t think it can be denied that there is real pressure on him between now and the end of the season. After almost 2 seasons of poor results, I couldn’t blame anyone for casting their eyes elsewhere for a manager who could unlock the reserves of potential we have undoubtedly accumulated.

I’m in a growing minority now, and it’s not the usual white noise of post-loss kneejerkism shouting us down in the match threads, but a stereo blast of genuine, consistently held concerns about Martinez’ stewardship.

For my part, I was close to wanting him out around January last season, when our poor run of results was compounded by a seemingly unending sequence of dour performances. I wanted to give him until Christmas this season, and while we continued to chalk up way too many numbers in the draw column, I felt we were tangibly closer to something special, as our performances yielded goals and an exciting vision of our on-field potential. But that promise still hasn’t delivered.

Realistically, all our hopes are belong to the FA Cup. Win it, he buys some time, lose it and he may well be walking, barring a serious upturn of form between now and season’s end. Even winning it won’t be good enough for some.

Personally, I think calls to sack him now are insane. Even detractors have to admit that he has strengthened the squad considerably and, in my mind, has laid some incredible groundwork for a unified, attractive style of football that could very well outlast his tenure here. For his signings, his impeccable conduct and, yes, that first season, I think he has bought himself the right to at least finish what he started in this year’s FA Cup. By April, I might well be flexible enough to add my voice to the choir if we fall short in both our remaining journeys.

But until then, I really believe we can achieve something under this manager, and it saddens me to see that so many people have effectively given up, demanding blood after every single poor result and seemingly revelling in the plight of their own team if it pushes Martinez closer to the exit door. Some can’t even bring themselves to credit a good performance if the result is anything less than a win. We’re morphing into indulged Geordies at a rate that brings tears to a glass eye. Get behind your team for the remainder of the season because, at the very least, he won’t be going anywhere before then.

To close, I’d like to pose a question, and I’ll paraphrase the American Republican party a few years ago. Disregarding results and table place (I know there’s some who can’t), and speaking only in terms of long-term indicators like structure, finances, squad development, new talent and a lasting impact on the character and style of our football...

Are we better off now than we were 4 seasons ago?
A very sensible post and I agree with all of it.

Great thread.

Whatever you think of the manager, he's going to be in charge until the end of the season, we know that's almost certain. So for the Martinez out group, try and remain quiet for the remaining games because what good is going to come out of moaning, booing etc.? Absolutely nothing.

I want him in for all reasons mentioned and also because of my stupid username..

You'd think that addressing that issue would be one of the lesser talents available to a man who it appears scouts and coaches all of our players single handed.

Anyway onwards and upwards to Saturday.

Nothing good comes from it. Just drains the confidence of our players and raises the opponent's. It's quite simply counter productive.

But his supporters can cheer and wax lyrical as much as they like?

Since when did supporting Everton become a totalitarian regime? Might as well not have a forum but a broadcast looping message.

Stuff like this makes even more glad the fans and media are spotlighting what a failure he has been.

His redemption for me is quite simple :

Stop chatting wham after every single defeat, accept some responsibility and bring in an experienced defensive coach.

It really is that simple for me.

However he's shown nothing at all so far to indicate that he is ever prepared to change things

My major concern is that players now want to leave and no chance to change that between now and the summer if the manager doesn't change.

Rock and a hard place!

Says everything about Martinez that he cites the Lukaku penalty miss as the decisive moment and takes no responsibility for his abysmal subs.

A coward that has thrown a young player [who has, let's be honest, carried him] under a bus

Coward.

This is why the more rational Everton fans are revelling in our defeats mate

'Oh joy, 7 home defeats so far! With still Arsenal to play! Hooray!'

Genuinely cannot wait to find our he has been dismissed by the new owner. All the snide little stories the newspapers have sat on will come out and, I guarantee, will never get a job anywhere near the size of Everton

Good riddance.
