Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I think we have been panicked into a complete shutdown. The selfish and quite disgraceful scenes at supermarkets says it all. Of course it’s worked out well for some. in France, Macron no longer has the yellow vests to worry about. Everyone has a perfect excuse to close borders. Draconian powers are being granted to governments and eagerly supported by a cowering population. And yet, as we all watch in panic that another 50,60, 70 per day have died, we forget about the other 1500+ that died in the same day. Remember too all the other viruses, Bird Flu, Sars etc etc that were going to wipe us out, but somehow didn’t, yet now we rush headlong to destroy the economy, the only thing that actually keeps us going, as well as our sanity.

I will get a letter tomorrow telling me that I must stay indoors for 12 weeks and the Police will be given authority to arrest me if I venture out. This is not life, this is absolute cowardice driven by the media. Boris has caved in to the ‘if you do something you can’t be blamed’ crowd. He should have stuck with the advice of the CMO and CSA and given two fingers to the media, and the calls for lockdown.

Many on here have been doom mongering about falling off a cliff edge with Brexit, but that will pass so smoothly now because no one will even notice any difference and at least we won’t be picking up the bill for the absolute financial turmoil that will hit Europe. We will be far too busy trying to recover from this ridiculous decision to close our economy....
Dear god this is such a bad take.

If you know anyone working in the NHS or any emergency or utility services, you’d know the absolute madness that is taking place at the moment and it’s not even properly hit yet.

This will effect everybody in some way.
It’s not scaremongering to say everyone should prepare themselves mentally for the next few months.

I have no fever. I also have no worries, perhaps that is why I see this for what it is. If you cannot see that the economy is being destroyed, then just watch the closures that will follow next...
Business is coping Pete. It will adapt and continue. This is not government's scaremongering or pandering to the media frenzy. The measures being taken are in response to lessons learnt from other countries who are 2 - 3 weeks ahead of us,

This thing kills people of your age group that is a fact. We have to do everything we can to minimise the spread of this thing.

I think most major cities will start to completely lock down next week with only essential staff allowed out,

This is my fear. That it's worse than they are letting on. Here in Spain they've taken over hotels to use as hospitals and are building field hospitals too

Spoke to my Dad yesterday and he's one playing it down and not taking it seriously (he's 69). We are lucky at the moment as myself and wife can work from home. I work in Technology for Morrisons and its crazy. I'd you aren't deemed critical to service then you are sent to logistics sites or stores. My wife is an ex nurse and current health visitor. It's looking ever more likely that she's going to have a rapid refresher and sent to help in the hospital. That's a worry for her currently. I think once we start getting reports about our hospitals looking like they are in Italy and it will really hit home for some.

Stay safe people.

Not sure if this has been posted, I saw it in a twitter thread somebody linked to earlier.

This is what awaits the UK. How people can dismiss this at this point is honestly baffling to me.

I was in favour of taking a more pragmatic approach to balance the economy but not anymore. Unfortunately the public can not be trusted to make the right choice of their own volition.

I'm not sure how you could suggest overreaction on the part of government by shutting things down. New York City is doubling its confirmed case count about every two days. At ten thousand cases, continuing that rate of growth puts them at two million cases in two weeks.

That collapses the economy whether we act or do nothing. The only questions are how many people we bury, and how out of hand social disorder gets.

Sure, you could object that there are good reasons to argue that the rate of growth in NYC confirmed cases is not sustainable. You might say that there are really 100,000 cases, with the growth rate resulting from the fact that we're now just starting to find them with testing. That isn't all that reassuring when starting from a higher baseline given that estimates suggest every infected person infects an average of two more, though.
