The figures show, If you leave your lockdown too late - its too late, its got away from you.
Look at the Philadelphia Vs St. Louis death rate graph from 1918.

Apart from the fact that (IMO) Everything is 'political' to some extent, 2 things strike me:

1) Nationally; Since the Labour Party's December thrashing there has been no effective opposition to the present Government's policies or reminders to them of their seeming lack of being ahead of the curve.

2) Internationally; as far as I know, all post war major 'Flu outbreaks have stemmed from China...I can remember there being only 4 kids out of 39 in my class at one stage, during the 1956 Asian 'Flu outbreak...The world will have to find the collective clout to get them to put their own house in order - or face a replay of today's problems down the track.

Or, just like in 1918, today's Great Corona Virus Epidemic, will graduate, just like the 'Great War' did, from being a 'One Off', to WW1, one of a series.

”Dear Brook Taverner Customer,

It is with great sadness that we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close all our Brook Taverner stores in England and Scotland from Sunday 22nd March at 4pm until we are advised that it is safe to re-open.

Events have moved so quickly over the past few days that we now know it is the right thing to do to protect our customers and staff in all our store locations and to keep everyone safe in these extraordinary times.....etc”

Watch everyone jump on this publicly funded bandwagon over the next few weeks.....
What’s your point?

Are you seriously trying to suggest that their footfall hasn’t been decimated and they weren’t going to make the call fo close anyway if it wasn’t for the Govt wage subsidy commitment?

Plenty of other retailers had already made the call e.g. TKmaxx

But if we had been pumping more money into protection, testing and equipment six-seven weeks ago (not just here, but everywhere across Europe) you'd like to think we'd have been able to a) save more lives and b) not damage the economy as much long term.

That would undoubtebly have helped, but the grim reality is that it's unlikely to have helped much.

On the economy, pretty much every country we trade with is going to be hit equally hard. If we'd prioritised our economy more, then we'd come out with more deaths and companies which, at first glance, looked healthier than our competitors.

But, who would they be exporting to ? To me, what seems to be happening on the economy, is a reasonably co-ordinated response from the major Western economies which means we'll all take a similar hit economically.

it definitely has and not to speak for Pete because I think we have very little in common but I suspect the initial plan was for that money to support hospitality , gyms , perhaps hairdressing and the non food retail industry may have been considered but some huge companies have certainly been quick to Avail themselves of the offer , which clearly they’re entitled to . Personally I’m just not sure if they were top of the list when it was drawn up .

One way I suppose to self isolate.

I'm sure you can still order clothes online to make you look like you belong in a Duran Duran video.
