At least this crisis proves that the "Blitz Spirit" often wheeled over the last several years for getting Brexit done is a fairytale.. Maybe we should replace the Union Jack with the "I'm alright Jack"

The blitz spirit did exist, it doesn’t today though....and as I say, Brexit won’t even be noticed.....

I think we have been panicked into a complete shutdown. The selfish and quite disgraceful scenes at supermarkets says it all. Of course it’s worked out well for some. in France, Macron no longer has the yellow vests to worry about. Everyone has a perfect excuse to close borders. Draconian powers are being granted to governments and eagerly supported by a cowering population. And yet, as we all watch in panic that another 50,60, 70 per day have died, we forget about the other 1500+ that died in the same day. Remember too all the other viruses, Bird Flu, Sars etc etc that were going to wipe us out, but somehow didn’t, yet now we rush headlong to destroy the economy, the only thing that actually keeps us going, as well as our sanity.

I will get a letter tomorrow telling me that I must stay indoors for 12 weeks and the Police will be given authority to arrest me if I venture out. This is not life, this is absolute cowardice driven by the media. Boris has caved in to the ‘if you do something you can’t be blamed’ crowd. He should have stuck with the advice of the CMO and CSA and given two fingers to the media, and the calls for lockdown.

Many on here have been doom mongering about falling off a cliff edge with Brexit, but that will pass so smoothly now because no one will even notice any difference and at least we won’t be picking up the bill for the absolute financial turmoil that will hit Europe. We will be far too busy trying to recover from this ridiculous decision to close our economy....

The 1500 people per day dying is from the entire population of 60 million. The majority of deaths from this virus in the UK are occurring in London currently, and the spread is increasing exponentially every day.

Italy is now seeing 700 deaths per day with a similar size population, that is quite simply a monumental figure versus the 1500 deaths per day you mention.

We seem to be heading down the same path as Italy so it’s a bit baffling that you are still so nonchalant about it.

He is a million % wrong. The people who told him that have done so solely because they don't want the fortunes they've salted away to be harmed by further falls in the stock market, so life must go on even if a couple of thousand people die (or much worse). They know that even the likes of pete wouldn't have that, so they are banging the FREEDOM drum instead.

I'm not saying life should continue, btw. There has to have been measures in place. My point is merely more should have been done beforehand if they really did give a crap about the old and vulnerable to ensure that the measures didn't have such an immediate negative impact on the economy and people's livelihoods.

There will be big, big organisations that benefit from this. As always with any global emergency.

But you can't ignore that the solutions so far are going to lead to more problems further down the line.

People are acting like there's nothing that could be done other than what we're doing now. Right now, there isn't. Maybe our measures in the UK aren't even enough.

But if we had been pumping more money into protection, testing and equipment six-seven weeks ago (not just here, but everywhere across Europe) you'd like to think we'd have been able to a) save more lives and b) not damage the economy as much long term.

Don’t be silly. You seem to think the economy is about Billionaires. It’s not. It’s about you being able to eat and live. I don’t have a job and I have little interest in the stock market. But you do because that is what sustains your life and yet you cannot see what you are now clamouring for...

I know you don't (or at least don't until it looks like Labour can get in), but the people who publish the Mail do. They don't care (and have never cared) about you or I, except to lie to us so we vote to keep them in power.

The ideal 'system' in my mind is a mix of captialism and socialism. Neither work on their own but a good mix together and it's pretty good.

I don't disagree with your second point. But it's where we are. Hopefully that changes after this but atm all we can do is hope this government props people up.

I'm more talking about this globally too though. If the concern was so much about the vulnerable (like it is now) why weren't we stepping up measures which would have ensured we could treat more.

I keep saying it I know but we had the time. The spread has been quick, I know, but not on this scale. We had at least a month to six weeks of warning.

Perhaps the time may have been there but the shortfall from 10 years of neglect has left the starting point further off than it had to be. That is the biggest factor.

I’m one of those at greatest risk, so I can afford to be nonchalant about it.....

Well you can also say that the same people shouting about Brexit for the last three years are the same people shouting and bossing everyone on Twitter over this.

That is again not negating the seriousness of this situation. People's lives are fully at risk here and it's terrible. I just wanted more to be done about it far earlier. It makes any arguments over Brexit look as stupid as they were at the time anyway.

That should be a serious criminal offence for him and Boris should be done for criminal negligence. Ignoring WHO advice and listening Cummings

Not defending either of them here.

But WHO have been critical of every European government (they also acted far too late themselves btw) and rightly so.

They've said we all acted too late. They've said it about Italy and France and even Germany.

The obvious massive frustration with the UK is that it could have bought us valuable time.

I don’t give a toss about politicians or their views and dreams. I care about my family, friends and fellow country folk. I care that our country is one worth living in and that everyone does well.....

I suppose that's what happens when greed is constantly rewarded, citizen's security is eroded, and people have an inability to compromise. Good job.

I don't know what you mean by greed being rewarded?

There has to be a line somewhere clearly but if someone works for what they earn (whether that's £20k a year or £20m) then I don't see the problem.

The issue is when the fair share of money isn't put back into the system and more importantly the money that is there isn't used in the right way.
