The economy was heading west anyway because tge economic model was flawed and vulerable, this way the pretence of capitalism can be upheld and the blame placed elsewhere.
The question must be why people were so self interested to allow the most vulnerable in society pay the price for excessive greed through voting for the likes of Cummings, de Pfeffel et al?

Now that is absolute nonsense. Our economy was fine....

The ideal 'system' in my mind is a mix of captialism and socialism. Neither work on their own but a good mix together and it's pretty good.

I don't disagree with your second point. But it's where we are. Hopefully that changes after this but atm all we can do is hope this government props people up.

I'm more talking about this globally too though. If the concern was so much about the vulnerable (like it is now) why weren't we stepping up measures which would have ensured we could treat more.

I keep saying it I know but we had the time. The spread has been quick, I know, but not on this scale. We had at least a month to six weeks of warning.

I think we have been panicked into a complete shutdown.

I have to disagree with you mate. Unfortunately a shutdown should have occurred very much earlier. This was a disaster waiting to happen.

Complacency and I'm sorry to say this, sheer greed has led us to this point. We can substitute panic here for desperation. The situation right now is manageable, if action isn't taken in the next 48 hrs, the consequences will be catastrophic.

It really is that dire. We're looking at millions potentially losing their lives. However there is still time to minimize, swerve those losses.

What that means is we all take personal responsibility. Accept that certain civil liberties, rights are going to be temporarily put on hold. For the good of the nation.

It's a bitter pill but one we all must swallow. I'm will to suspend my rights temporarily, if it means we can save lives.

I think we have been panicked into a complete shutdown. The selfish and quite disgraceful scenes at supermarkets says it all. Of course it’s worked out well for some. in France, Macron no longer has the yellow vests to worry about. Everyone has a perfect excuse to close borders. Draconian powers are being granted to governments and eagerly supported by a cowering population. And yet, as we all watch in panic that another 50,60, 70 per day have died, we forget about the other 1500+ that died in the same day. Remember too all the other viruses, Bird Flu, Sars etc etc that were going to wipe us out, but somehow didn’t, yet now we rush headlong to destroy the economy, the only thing that actually keeps us going, as well as our sanity.

I will get a letter tomorrow telling me that I must stay indoors for 12 weeks and the Police will be given authority to arrest me if I venture out. This is not life, this is absolute cowardice driven by the media. Boris has caved in to the ‘if you do something you can’t be blamed’ crowd. He should have stuck with the advice of the CMO and CSA and given two fingers to the media, and the calls for lockdown.

Many on here have been doom mongering about falling off a cliff edge with Brexit, but that will pass so smoothly now because no one will even notice any difference and at least we won’t be picking up the bill for the absolute financial turmoil that will hit Europe. We will be far too busy trying to recover from this ridiculous decision to close our economy....

That’s an absolutely ridiculous take, even by your standards.

Thing is though he's not wrong about certain aspects of it. Why weren't all the western governments more proactive instead of reactive, when they had ample warning time, for example? The impact on the economy would still be big, but not as big as it has been if more measures to ensure the health systems were better prepared were in place.

I think you can say that without taking away from how dire and new the situation is.

He is a million % wrong. The people who told him that have done so solely because they don't want the fortunes they've salted away to be harmed by further falls in the stock market, so life must go on even if a couple of thousand people die (or much worse). They know that even the likes of pete wouldn't have that, so they are banging the FREEDOM drum instead.

I understand the emphasis on hygiene to present the virus spreading further so that's all fine.

Bigger picture here though is that it might force more good hygiene onto people. In small doses (being clean) is perfectly normal but over cleaning yourself will weaken yours, and more importantly , your children's immune system.

This obsession with hygiene now has to be a short term thing or we will end up as a race , more susceptible to viruses in the future.

Don’t be silly. You seem to think the economy is about Billionaires. It’s not. It’s about you being able to eat and live. I don’t have a job and I have little interest in the stock market. But you do because that is what sustains your life and yet you cannot see what you are now clamouring for...

We're heading for the biggest economic downturn since WWII. And the question has to be asked why.

At least this crisis proves that the "Blitz Spirit" often wheeled over the last several years for getting Brexit done is a fairytale.. Maybe we should replace the Union Jack with the "I'm alright Jack"
