Women footballers claims for “equal” pay... when they already get too much.

I think the most ridiculous example of this in sport is tennis. How on earth can the women’s prize money at Wimbledon be the same as the mens? Equal pay they cry. But they only play 3 sets, so it’s not actually equal at all. Half the matches are over in the time most men’s matches have just completed one set ffs.

Slightly unfair I feel, the more evenly matched ladies tennis matches take nearly the same time due to the longer rallies. The mens game takes the time it does due to how many second serves required. So actual in-play time would be close.

However the women are riding on the coat tails of the men during grand slam events as how many people would go to see an early round women's match at Wimbledon? The people are there to watch Federer/Nadal etc. By the time you get to a ladies only day it is semi final time and you only need 15k to fill centre court. If the grand slams were at different times for men and women the income brought in would show a huge imbalance and thus the women getting equal pay at the slams is fundamentally wrong.

I don't blame them for trying to cash in on progressivism becoming a civic religion, as they're never going to get a better chance to get people behind their cause, but while they may be able to shame the US authorities into basically subsidising the women's team's pay, they'll meet their match if they start trying to wrangle money out of FIFA.

It'll be funny to see how far all of this goes. I'd love to see Sue Barker's reaction to the wheelchair tennis final ending with the winner demanding Federer money.

Womens football is the only sport I think I could match the best at, tennis, golf, cycling whatever I would get my arse handed to me, but I reckon I could do a job at right back in England team. I'd be like a worse Hibbert

A countries FA is there to run football for everyone in that nation. That is the point of it.

Women are not asking for equal pay in club football (it wouldn't make sense) but they should absolutely get it for representing their country. The pay doesn't go into their bank account its to cover stuff like not working during the time of being away, expenses when away with their team, even child care and stuff like that.

Same with any other national side, youth football, disabled football etc, they should all get the same nominal fee.

The woman's national team apparently generates more revenue than the men’s national team does so they are completely within their rights to ask for equal pay.

The women get a higher percentage of the money made from the competition. 13% compared to 7%.

Just happens that the men's game makes more money.

Also...don't the men give the money to charity? The England team do.

Apparently some US women are squabbling over “equal” pay, complaining the US men get more. The standard of women’s football was an abomination (the US women’s team lost to a junior boys team from Dallas), its in its infancy and in all likelihood won’t make the huge stride needed to hit a quality level from a women’s standpoint (like women’s tennis has) but that’s besides the point. They get less money because they generate less, almost 1/80th in World Cup revenue in comparison to the men to be precise ($73 million to $6 billion). The lunacy of such claims cannot spread here (pretty sure it won’t as there isn’t the same degree of ignorance here for it to happen in the media or shysters chancing there arm over anything in the courts). This fella covers it nicely:

In March of this year, The Los Angeles Times publisherd a stinging op-ed that said: “The U.S. women’s soccer team outperforms the men’s team when it comes to victories, domestic viewership, name recognition and general awesomeness. Its members are stars, consistently ranked No. 1 in the world, and they make millions of dollars for their employer, the U.S. Soccer Federation.”

The op-ed goes on to discuss the aforementioned lawsuits and the reasons the ladies should be paid the same figures las the men. However, just like the other commentators, the article misses the point. Yes, the women are indeed “No. 1 in the world,” but they’re number one in women’s sports, which has far fewer fans and plays far fewer games.

Ouch. Continued....

One of the major factors that separate men’s sports and women’s is a not so little thing called revenue. To put it bluntly, female soccer players, just like female basketball players and female hockey players, are paid less because their respective sports make less. The total prize money for the Women’s World Cup in France this July was $30 million; the total prize money for the men’s 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be $440 million.

According to Mike Oznian, a writer for Forbes, the 2015 Women’s World Cup “brought in almost $73 million, of which the players got 13%. The 2010 men’s World Cup in South Africa made almost $4 billion, of which 9% went to the players.” Last year, the men’s World Cup in Russia generated more than $6 billion in revenue; the participating teams shared about $400 million. That is less than 7 percent of overall revenue. Meanwhile, the 2019 Women’s World Cup made somewhere in the region of $131 million, doling out $30 million, well more than 20 percent of collected revenue, to the participating teams. It seems a pay gap does exist, after all.

Precisely, women get too much. Continued..

Lastly, men’s sports, especially men’s team sports, are inherently more entertaining to watch than women’s. Whether it happens to be men’s soccer or basketball, when compared with the female equivalent, the skill levels on show are incomparable.

One of these politicians “Chuck Schumer” has been backing the women on there calls....no doubt with such support for their cause he can testify to being a season ticket holder at his local women’s teams where his presence makes up a tenth of the crowd.

Oh look, some bored sophist has discovered the difference between absolute and relative measures (welcome to maths 101). You can drink 0.01% cyanide, which is just a wee-bit when mixed with 99.99% water. And why offer your opinion as if it's fact, when it's just your opinion. And why put a politician's name in quotes?

The part that is often missed in this is that the US women generate a lot of revenue for USA Soccer, as stated plainly in point 42 of their lawsuit: 42. The WNT’s success on the field has translated into substantial revenue generation and profits for the USSF. In fact, during the period relevant to this case, the WNT earned more in profit and/or revenue than the MNT.

The US Women are not running there dispute with FIFA they are running it with USSoccer. They make less money from the federation than the US Men's team despite regularly bringing in more revenue to the federation. With the exception of World Cup years (when the men qualify), the women should make more and they don't.

How do you make it through life being such a dumbass?

The woman's national team apparently generates more revenue than the men’s national team does so they are completely within their rights to ask for equal pay.

Exactly! Anywhere else in the world then its a no go as the men generate so much more. But in America, the womens team is more popular and brings in more revenue so they deserve to be paid equally if not more than the men as they bring in the money.

I dont think they are fighting to be paid the same as Messi, they are fighting to get the same amount as Antonee Robinson and Joze Altidore when on International duty.

If you have a problem with that then you need to take a good look at yourselves.

But like everything else in the world, men have the benefit of privelige.

Women’s football has only been allowed to exist for a fraction of the time men’s football has, because they’re women!

Girls weren’t allowed to play football at school when I was a kid and I’m under 40, so it’s no surprise the quality is not as high.

Overall, pay is linked to commercial revenues - fair enough.

The very biggest teams get disgusting amounts of money, and so the very best players earn disgusting sums also.

Hence the highest paid women footballers earning less in a year than plenty of average male players earn in a week of a month.

But that falls down at the international level in the USA, which is where the pay discussion is being had.

They men earn far more than the women at club level, I’m sure. They’re not arguing to change that.

But at international level;

1 team is garbage; the other is the best compared to their competition

1 team does nothing to promote the popularity of the game in their country through their abilities; the other just had a ticker tape parade through New York city

1 team is generally mocked by their country; the other inspires people and improves lives.

Now... do you still think the argument your making hold water.

This seems largely reasonable with one tweak: the US Men’s team is very popular but the Women’s is arguably the most successful soccer team ever
