Why We Lost

Everyone is saying arsenal were better than us but that's because WE LET, no matter where they had the ball we just sat off them, at no point on the pitch did we press them, to beat Arsenal you get in there faces, we didn't, we turned up let them have the ball and got beat, an as we all know if you let Arsenal have the ball with as much time as they want they break you down. Which they did, we never really looked liked winning as every time they attacked you could see a goal coming and finally Barry makes a mistake and it's game over.

Why did we lose? Bad tactics

They dominated the first half; we were competitive for about 35 minutes in the 2nd half...so, fair enough, we were 'in it' during that time. That said, I was never convinced we'd get a result on the day.

If Moyes had done that I'd have been queuing up with others to condemn it. Consistency dictates Martinez should get the brickbats for that stunt. It was an appalling decision. There's loyalty and then there's stupidity. Something tells me though that if he had to make the decision again he'd do it.

I never really felt that we'd get a result either during the game tbh

Totally agree on Robles, a ridiculous decision that. We were calling it before the game and so it transpired, as he was mince. If Jags had been fit then I'd have have forgiven him for it, but with young Stones forced into action then the back line needed the added security that Howard would have brought.

What I don't get is, why didn't he just play Howard in the cup and then let Robles play this weekend?

Why risk Robles in a one off game?

I dont see what he offers, tbh. This maybe harsh, but I've never seen him have an assured performance and I'd hate the idea of him playing for Everton again.

We need a new deputy for Howard. It's difficult because decent keepers wont sign up if they know they'll be benchwarmers. Maybe if we qualify for the EL it'd persuade a better standard of GK to commit knowing there's greater likelihood of getting game time to prove themselves?

We lost because we didn't play as well as I think we can and Arsenal played near enough at their best. Not much more too it. We'll probably beat Arsenal at Goodison but they were the better team on Saturday.

Cannot see it unfortunately. Draw maybe. The last time we beat arsenal at home was jan 2006 (!!).

Re Robles: in the context of 'reasons for our loss', his being selected is a bit of a red herring. Notwithstanding that, (and sticking with a piscatorial angle), he does flounder around a bit and the constant look of worry on his kipper suggests he is not having a whale of a time out there.

The sole fact of the matter is that, by PL goal keeping standards, he is something of a minnow.

Why we lost? Our players are too greedy. You see when it was 1 -1 and Mirallas had a shot straight at the keeper? Lukaku was unmarked and had an open goal. If that ws Liverpool, Suarez or sturridge would have passed it to put them 2-1 up. Mirallas didn't even apologise to Lukaku. No-one even had a go at Mirallas

I actually don't mind him getting minutes in a league game, because you can recover lost ground more easily

In a single elimination game though, you need the strongest line up possible

I'm not overly against him, but his distribution is absolute mince and needs to improve ASAP

As I have previously stated, when it comes to selfishness/greediness, Mirallas is top of the tree. Lukaku had a clear shot on and Mirallas (as usual) butchered it. Massively over rated player (imho)

I see you have countered my fishy theme with a beef one lol

Real lack of cohesion due to us fielding a team thats in theory our strongest near enough that hadnt played together in a fair while. Do hope it means Barkley is fit and firing though after a pretty good performance from him.

I actually disagree mate.

I've literally just watched it again.

It was nigh on impossible to get the ball to Lukaku. 2 Arsenal defenders in the way, Lukaku a yard or 2 behind, impossible.

Mirallas' shot was still pitiful mind you!

I don't know if it was tactics or poor excution of the tactics. Fact is if Barkleys cahance had gone in and we'd gone on to win, nobody would be criticising Martinez or his tactics.

End of the day, their big players turned up, ours didn't.

As for Robles, Not sure. I've always thought Goalie is the hardest position to get into form. Which is possibly another argument for not playing him in such an important game.

Seems to be a Spanish trait playing reserve goalie in cup comps. Barcelona do it religiously with Pinto and even Madrid have been playing Casillas in the cup and CL.
Yes I know there's a huge gulf in quality between those names and Robles, But I think it's a habit particularly common in Spanish managers and clubs. I don't think he'll change. Get used to it.

We really need to smash Cardiff now or we'll be on fume factor 8 on Saturday night
