Why Roberto Martinez's Style of Play Will Make Everton an EPL Threat

Moyes has had by far, by FAR worse starts than Martinez. We look promising, it won't be long until it all fits into place.

Im surprised with how quickly our players have taken to his style. Its not perfect by any means, but its clear that they know how to play and with Martinez' Deadline Day additions, that should only speed up the process. As you say, we look promising.

The thing is those stats are against teams who are utter gash. We should have won all 3 games. I get what he is trying to say but until we play a half decent side it is pretty meaningless.

Statistics only tell part of the story of course, but possession is one statistic that is never bad to have in your favour. If the opponent doesn't have the ball, they can't hurt you. Seems a rediculously simply philosophy.... and one that Moyes, for all his good work, never really understood.

Very good point regarding possession - this is a concept well understood by people like Catterick, Revie, and dare I say it Shankly of the old school - Kendall also applied it in his era; of course we need someone to convert all this into goals - this is the crucial aspect of our play which will determine how our season goes. I can only hope that we provide Lukaku and Jelavic with the kind of service they can thrive on and convert any superiority into goals and points.

That explains our woeful defensive record under Moyes whilst Wigan were pumping out clean sheet after clean sheet with their possession style.

I am not suprised 1 bit.

The end of the day, they are all footballers, and every one of them is a good footballer. They had been educated as a footballer since the age of 10, in various Academies all over the world. No bad footballers come out of these systems. We are an Elite football team, and pay Elite wages, ovcourse they should be able to play football more.

This is what anoys me about people who defen the likes of moyes, Aladyce and Pullis. They will use the old "Can only work with what they have" bollocks. The managers have not gone and taken 16 blokes from a pub, they are ALL Pro footballers FFS!!

I don't disagree with you in theory.... Obviously if your opponent doesn't have the ball they can't hurt you....but it's about us having and controlling possession in the right areas..... Just as an example... We could knock the ball around between our back 4 in our own half for 85 mins of the game without ever posing a threat to the opposition..... Stats will show we dominated possession..... There needs to be a conceding of possession at times to draw teams out..... This is the balance we need. It's ok for teams not to score against us but we need to balance that with scoring goals ourselves...... It's a connundrum ha ha

Yeah but look at the shot totals. We're not playing pub teams here, these are Prem teams, even if they're not Chelsea and City.
