Why I stopped reading Toffeeweb.

In fairness to TW they do a great job reporting the news of the club, some great links to the local press, and gives those of us not in Liverpool a feel for whats happening locally.

I think i still have a quick look on there before i come on here as a debt of gratitude for TW introducing me to this place.

TW is like your ex friend who introduced you to your girlfriend. He then turned into a miserable depressed moaning old git but you still acknowledge him when you see him in the street cause of that night he hooked you up.

Ha ha great analogy there!(y)

TW has longevity. It predates the club's own website (or it did in one form or another) and has more clout than any other site outside of the official site in terms of traffic, so it must be doing something right.

A comprehensive coverage of all things Everton. Its fan comments/featured articles are worth the effort on its own. People slagging off that website must have an axe to grind with perceived policy on there. In other words, it's not towing the club's line on every issue.

I would say its a big plus that it thinks for itself and is not tied to the club I dont agree with everything said on there but it does have some good open and frank discussions(y)

Good point, Dave. It might get negative in its editorial, but we're all welcome to put our point across on the site. Anyone that does not like the way things look on it, can easily write an article. If it is coherent, it will be published.

The key to reading Toffeeweb

is to know what you're getting into.

As a website where people don't have to register to post, it attracts a broader church than most forums. To be fair to Lyndon and Michael, however blatantly partisan their editorial tone, you do still find both ends of the spectrum on the site - for every Tony Marsh, there is a Richard Dodd.

Personally, I think that the fact that the editorial bias is contrary to the general consensus on this forum (probably the most pro-board, pro-Kirkby forum on the net) makes this bias all the more obvious and jarring to GOT members.

The other issue that arises with a 'live' mailbag is that it attracts more than it's fair share of internet warriors, hence the bitching that appears in the comment threads.. not much can be done about that.

My own opinion is that Toffeeweb has it's place. It's a slick, polished site that still looks more professional than the OS, the fact that it has a negative slant may say more about the current disposition of the general fanbase than it does about the website. If you recall, young Mr Marsh was generally conspicuous by his absence last season, but if the club provides the ammunition, he is regrettably all too keen to fire it.

Oh, and coyney, I don't think we'll ever get to see the mouth watering event of tony Marsh and Doddy in the same room.... I'm convinced they're both the same bi-polar bloke :D

Maybe the TW readers can fill me in, but what's the point of going on there? I get all my news and views on the club from this place. I appreciate some of the club info on the site and for many years it was my sole port of call for matters Everton, but as far as current news and opinion is concerned I don't really need anywhere but here.

Bruce,

you strike me as the type of bloke who would usually check more than one media source for news, why should all matters Everton be any different? :)

Could have sworn I read a TW article last year saying a dispute had been resolved over which forum would be their official forum partner. My mistake.

This forum sprung up at about the time that the old Toffeeweb forum suffered a megalomania induced implosion. A lot (or the majority) of the established posters and the mods who effectively carried the old Toffeeweb Forum were here. As the Toffeeweb Forum died, it made sense that this one should take it's place... a no-brainer for all concerned b)

When I first asked EFC if they would mind the site using the logo etc. back in 1995, they didn't even know what "Internet" was about (no big surprise, my friend sent them a few songs he wrote about Everton on DAT around the same time, and they didn't know what to do with the tapes - until years later they were released on a CD). And still. 13 years later, they haven't managed to create a site as user-friendly as TW has been all these years.

BTW, I haven't been connected to TW for about ten years now.

To be fair, TW was my first experience of Everton on the web, and as others have said did (does?) a better job than the OS in many areas. Indeed it was through TW that I met many of the regulars here on the old TW forum, so for that gratitude is sent their way.

I just feel that now it has kinda outgrown its usefulness because as communities grow they tend to cluster around particular interests or personality types. All of the main Everton sites have their personalities. That doesn't mean an insular approach because news comes into those communities from many sources, but the reaction to that news has a certain brand depending on which site you visit. I happen to enjoy the largely positive flavour of things here as football is something to be enjoyed.

You were an editor on TW Makis?

My first introduction to Everton on the web was Toffee web and I lapped it up. Comming from Northern Ireland, as I do, it kept me informed about all things Evertonian. I quit when the abuse to posters became vitriolic and personal. Reading some of the comments left me logging off with a bad taste in my mouth. I sincerely hope this never happens here because the warmth and friendship I've found on this site is extraordinary (y)
