Monty, don't really know you but know what you are going through. Been there many times myself. Remember the good times, take yourself away, have a weep and remember him as a wonderful friend. It will hurt, but the pain fades and you are left with happy memories.

Watching somebody or something suffering is the hardest thing any of us should have to do. BUT they are just that "suffering" It is better to remember them as they were, and not as they are, as they worsen.
Your dog will only get worse, it will not get better. It should be an easy decision for any caring person, to avoid them suffering more than they need to. They are being selfish in their reasons for wanting to prolong its life. They dont want to part with it because they love it, as do you.
You need to make them realise that their selfishness will make it suffer, and also you all suffer. As its quality of life worsens, and the pain increases, it will be what you remember more when you think back about it. You will struggle to remember the good times, you will just remember its suffering last days.

We lost a cat about 8 months ago, mate. She had cancer and had to be put to sleep. We'd had her for 14 years, and we were really close. We are with all our animals. It's awful to go through.

I'll say a quiet prayer for you, mate.

I would have a hard time without some animal friends in my home. I have had 2 cats(lost one who passed away in Jan. 2005 ), 5 snakes, a bearded dragon, and a mexican red knee tarantula.

I love the animals and even though you eventually have to face the sad moment where they pass away, you are doing such an amazing thing by providing a warm home for these furry, and sometimes not furry, friends who often give you many smiles over time.
