I would have a hard time without some animal friends in my home. I have had 2 cats(lost one who passed away in Jan. 2005:( ), 5 snakes, a bearded dragon, and a mexican red knee tarantula.

I love the animals and even though you eventually have to face the sad moment where they pass away, you are doing such an amazing thing by providing a warm home for these furry, and sometimes not furry, friends who often give you many smiles over time.(y)

which one are fattening up for xmas dinner

We lost a cat about 8 months ago, mate. She had cancer and had to be put to sleep. We'd had her for 14 years, and we were really close. We are with all our animals. It's awful to go through.

I'll say a quiet prayer for you, mate.

Thanks so much for that Nebs, greatly appreciated mate

Here we go, the saga that is our Polly.

Wife and daughter in tears when we left for the thirty five mile drive to the hospital, dog moping about on the back seat curled up in her bed, I had a lump in my throat. The weather was crap, traffic was appalling and we arrived late for her appointment. As soon as she gets out of the car Polly's tail goes up and she starts jumping about, something she had not done in weeks. We had to wait for what seemd an eternity to see a vet, wife sobbing and me feeling like joining her. We go into the consulting room by which time Pollys eyes were bright she was alert and...........picture the scene.........this dog starts running on the spot, working out with dumb bells and a skipping rope. I try explaining to the vet what we wanted at which point she informs me that Polly wasn't, in her opinion, in pain, seemed bright and lively to the extent that she did not want to put her down. She then explains that a 'new' treatment may help her................what the hell can you do, tears from the wife, huge lump in your own throat and hole about to come in your arse pocket. I will swear that dog was out to make liars of us all, she lives and is so far considerably better trhan she was but unfortunately it will kill her sooner or later. The average time for a dog to survive with lymphoma is 6/9 months she has now made it to 15 months.......and yes she is a star and I'm a soft [Poor language removed]

Monty, Losing a pet is horrendous, we went through it 12 months ago. Glad you have a bit of extra time, i'm sure you'll make the most of it. When the time comes, you'll know mate, you'll know. Mine was a reet fiesty thing and when that fight and mischief had gone from her eyes, it was time to go. I deal with death and destruction on a daily basis at work but it really really upset me when she had to have the blue liquid, still does.

When I first started work it was in a slaughterhouse mate, death in huimans doesn't bother me that much either, your dog is a totally different ball game............I wish it wasn't

you're right mate, my old shephard was me bezzy mate for ten years, dorises had come and gone but me dog was always there. Death in people doesn't affect me, this did, I really feel for ya fella.

We have another one now, no replacement, he's a character. Still miss me old girl though.

Yorkies are little troopers...my aunt's lived to almost 19. It's a sad story, actually...she was so old that her sight had gone and she ended up falling into the pool out back and drowned.

I know that's a huge downer story but, when her time comes Monts, at least you'll be there with her. I dunno if they allow it back in Blighty but here in the States you have the option of holding them as they pass; it's tough, and you'll be a blubbering blob, but I've done it and don't regret it. It's proper closure, something my aunt didn't get.

Its like some stupid duty but I've held most of my dogs when they've been put down, Polly will be no different. Polly is a Yorkie cross, unlike Tara, my previous dog who would have given her life to protect me Polly has always expected me to protect her.

Sorry to say but again tonight she has taken a turn for the worse, running a temperature and panting, we'll wait and see but I can't take much more of this it plucks at your very fibre
