I would have thought that Ukraine would benefit from the financial investment from the EU, vital in rebuilding it.

It's a very interesting development. How will the EU respond to an attack on a member state? Given veto status, Ukraine will not allow any concessions in EU negotiations with Russia if it impacts on their attempt to reclaim the annexed areas.
There's other nations keen to join who might resent Ukraine being allowed to jump the queue.

True that. Ones with economies and political organisations more aligned to what is required given that Ukraine pre-war was about as big a dumpster fire of an economy as you'd find in Europe and mired in corruption.

Of course the war makes a very compelling reason to grant an exception but those knocking on the door will do what they can to exploit this and/ or not be overly happy.

Meeting in London today to discuss the rebuilding of the Ukraine, which sort of presupposes that Ukraine will force the Russians back to their border. I've a feeling the Donbass where most of the damage to infrastructure has taken place will be repaired by Russia.

Who is involved in the meeting?

I can't see Russia being pushed back and or returning the Donbass, Kherson or Crimea. They will be under Russian occupation and rebuilding their responsibility.

The big question for me is what happans with the coastal area west of the Dneiper. Does Russia stick with what it has (and claim its objectives of Donbass is accomplished) or carry on fighting at great cost? Depends very much on which side is willing to sacrifice I guess.

Ukraine is actually pretty close to Kherson atm

Finding the BBC reports of Ukrainian very odd,one day Severodonetsk is as good as taken by Russia, then last night a report from Ukrainian trenches that they were poised to drive the Russians out. I appreciate that the BBC is to a certain extent a propaganda tool of government just as RT is for Russia, but their reports are disjointed and so lack basic credibility.

There’s a good chance that Ukraine will re-take Kherson and push the Russians back over the Dneiper.

That would make for a natural border given just how crap the Russians are at opposed river crossings.

Thing is neither Ukraine or Russia are giving much away regarding the battle of Severodonetsk.

Urban warfare by nature is confused and chaotic. One thing to note though is that the Ukes made a pontoon crossing of the River north of the city a few nights ago - that gives them a resupply route and/or an escape route.
