This strategy is nothing new, Soviet "volunteers" (actual air force pilots) and MIGs openly operated during Korean and Vietnam wars against Americans, also boots on the ground, but of course both sides closed their eyes and pretended all is fine.

This is a same thing, classic proxy war. If there is no nuclear weapons and Armageddon looming, we would be in World War part 5 by this point

Russia seems to be on the retreat around Kharkiv, Ukrainian army is going to be at the border soon. In the Donbass Ukrainian positions in Rubizhne are under threat though because of a flanking attack. If Ukraine can keep up the pressure around Kharkiv though they will be able to put pressure on Izyum which is Russia's hq for the offensive, and they will soon be able to shell Belgorod which is a city in Russia where a lot of supplies passes through. Also the counter offensive by Kharkiv frees up a bunch of soldiers to go defend the Donbass as Kharkiv is Ukraine's second largest city and has been under attack since the start of the war.

They are actually further towards the Russian border than the Livemap shows. Ukraine has soldiers in Lyptsi which is 10km from Russian border
