Well, yes. It also relies on them being listened to. I still don't think we're at the point of disastrous escalation, however. I'm also surprised it's taken Lavrov that long to start rattling his sabre over NATO countries (Not NATO itself) arming Ukraine.

With the new NATO heavy gear about to be unleashed along with the additional armour - Ukraine has the capability to hurt them even more. The next couple of weeks will be very interesting.

So now Putin and Lavrov up the rhetoric and once again pull the WWIII / nuclear card. Straight out of the old Soviet victim playbook.

Hopefully someone in the Kremlin is sharpening their ice-axe and this thing will be all over before too long.

This was my read too. I think if they get something approaching a face saving off-ramp there could be a climbdown in the next few weeks. I would imagine they are well aware they cannot win a conventional conflict.

Well put. Watch for the upcoming counter offensive by the Ukranians in the upcoming weeks. Whispers are suggesting as soon as two weeks as heavy armor is already available to them the 155's for instance. The amount of weaponry entering Ukraine is at a unprecedented pace.

This was my read too. I think if they get something approaching a face saving off-ramp there could be a climbdown in the next few weeks. I would imagine they are well aware they cannot win a conventional conflict.

The West has known this for some time, but they are still shocked how quick Putin's war machine has been decimated. Lloyd Austin has noted brazenly that he wants the total weakening of the Russian army I am sure this was understood loud and clear at the Kremlin. Enter Lavrov and his Nuclear option.

Indeed. It's shockingly fast.

If Russia had a vaguely western style government and they'd opened up to the west, they'd have a booming economy and be pushing western Europe for living standards given their natural resources.

And instead we get this. I don't see how Putin gets out of this. It's damage limitation time for Putin now. Russia may be "winning" this phase but it's purely pyrrhic if the west and NATO step up. Unless Ukraine is on the point of falling over/ collapse.

Very interesting and crazy couple of weeks ahead I fear.

This would be my bet. Ukraine look like they will now win this war. It will also put the fear of a Russian bogeyman storming across Europe to bed for years to come….
