Cool story.

Never in my life have I seen a radar with 180 FoV.

Even stern radars have more, majority of X and S band radars have blind spots but never that much.
The Slava class cruisers have multiple radar systems responsible for search/target acquisition and also fire-control.

It’s big 3D search radar does indeed provide 360 degree coverage. Once it picks up a target, control is handed over to its fire control radar systems, of which there are two.

1. 3R41 Volna responsible for long range s-300F (grumble) missiles

2. MPZ-391 Baza responsible for mid-range OSA (gecko) missiles

The 3R41 radar system controlling its LR missiles is ancient and indeed only provides 180 degrees of coverage. However.

I personally don’t buy the TB2 distraction theory, so just how did 2 relatively old and slow cruise missiles evade detection/destruction by 3 layers of air defence?

@tsubaki provided an interesting link to a theory backed up by a computer simulation that shows weather and sea-state could have played a key role here.

Weather was bad, sea-state 3 with high wave heights. The Neptune missiles are sea-level huggers, so it’s possible that the Moskva’s powerful 3D search radar failed to pick them up or if it did then it’s fire control radars failed to lock on due to wave clutter.

I thin theTB2 drone played a role in all this but I think it was target location/ surveillance rather than acting as a decoy. Either way it was a massive victory for the Ukes.

Sea state 3 with height wave height?

Dosent even make sense, sea state 3 is barely slight seas with max wave height of about 1-1.5 meter. Nothing.

:(Lucky Russia

Then it looks like we are doing something right….

In a statement, Russia's foreign ministry said: "London's unbridled information and political campaign aimed at isolating Russia internationally, creating conditions for containing our country and strangling the domestic economy" were responsible for its decision.
It added: "In essence, the British leadership is deliberately aggravating the situation around Ukraine, pumping the Kyiv regime with lethal weapons and coordinating similar efforts on the part of Nato."

But everyone knows this. Not a soul on here thinks the west or Ukraine are without blame, that does not stop the fact that innocent men, women and children are being killed in this war.

You seem obsessed with making it into a “what-aboutery” thing, we all know the west invaded Iraq, it changes eff all about today’s situation. You need to stop waffling in about, it’s cheap.
It does change that fact that NATO could have a big part to play in this whole scenario, pulling the strings and letting Ukraine do the dirty work and feel the wrath at the same time.

It’s not like they don’t have history for it.

Just like they done in Yugoslavia.

Whatever it was, the Ukrainians have more than likely sunk the pride of the Russian's Black Sea Fleet. It's not a good testament to their professionalism.

Although you could say the same about their air force, their troops, quality of their logistics, communications the accuracy (inaccuracy) of their PGMs.

Actually, pretty much everything up to now.

This is supremely typical of Russian news. Blaming the terrible west for "pumping" weapons whilst blithely ignoring the whole invasion and indiscriminate assault on Ukraine.

It does if the missiles (neptunes in this case) are sea skimmers.

I’d say it’s more of an issue with the Russian Search and fire control radars not being capable of locking targets in wave clutter. Check out the simulation linked by @tsubaki. If proves that the mid/short range missiles didn’t engage at all.

Seems like the entire Russian sea-borne AD systems are geared up to go up against US harpoons or their equivalent. The Neptunes are designed from the Russian KH-35, kinda ironic that they got done by their own technology. Doesn’t surprise me as they’re not the smartest are they?
