You'd have to guess the proportional casualty rate would be between the Sheffield's 20 killed and WWII HMS Hood's 3 survivors out of 1,400. Since there Moskva seems to have had the structural integrity to float and be towed for some hours, maybe the initial deaths weren't too severe.

I know that, in a way, the greater the Russian casualties, the sooner Putin might pack in and go away, they're all still people, with mums and wives, and probably very little idea what's going on.

Yeah conscripts are a weird one as the choice is you go and hope you survive or you refuse and choose to die immediately so essentially you choose suicide (and they'll likely punish your loved ones too). I can't imagine the actual cause is something they think much about beyond survival. I think if I was conscripted my one and only thought would be coming back alive. Not principled, but reality.

When army that was heavy favorite start losing, especially after series of embarrassments like whole cruiser getting sunk and attacks on Russian ground, they just gonna start bombing without discrimination, especially to save the face.

During WW1, everyone expected that Austro-Hungarian army (supposedly Great Power) gonna smash tiny Serbia in a week. Instead Serbs beat back two Habsburg invasions, with horrific losses and huge embarrassment for the Empire.
So in a frustration and revenge, and especially after third successful invasion, A-H army started commiting terrible atrocities in Serbia, quarter of entire Serbia population died as a consequence of Austrian invasions and occupation until 1918.

What is even worse, it was Slavic soldiers of Austro-Hungarian army that were noted for their brutality there, especially Croat, Polish and Slovene regiments.
