I’m struggling to understand where you’re going with this.

If you look at the history of the place - way back in the early 90’s the majority of people in Donbas (including native Russians) voted to leave the old Soviet Union. It was only later after Ukranian govt mismanagement of the regions economy that the seed of independence was sown.

Privatisation of the local mining industries brought about the rise of the Oligarchs who got rich while the poor got poorer and increased the locals feeling of isolation and neglect.

Violence between Ukranian nationalists and pro-Russian separatists was at this time limited to the odd kicking, nothing serious.

It wasn’t until 2014, when Putin’s little green men showed up in Crimea and culminated in Russias full annexation of Crimea that things started to deteriorate in the Donbas.

Russia embedded its own Spetsnaz forces within the political parties of the
DPR and LPR and things went downhill rapidly. Russia was now funding and driving a civil insurgence in Donbas.

The Minsk and Minsk 2 protocols were pushed heavily by Russia to bring an end to the fighting but the terms of these were biased greatly toward the DPR and LPR and forced loads of Pro Ukrainians to leave their homes and move west. (Russias plan was beginning to work).

What was left was a fragile peace with only sporadic fighting along the borders of control until this year when Putin engineered his Casus Belli claiming Pro Russians were being tortured giving him in his mind, the right to invade.

If I look back at all of this subjectively I can only see Russia as the instigator and aggressor, continually fanning the flames of violence in the region. What was a small scale, low-level civil matter was hijacked by Moscow and used to justify their invasion and allow them to move toward their ultimate aim and that is to create a land bridge from Russia to Crimea and achieve full control of the Sea of Azov.
