Vladimir Putin’s advisers are “too afraid to tell him the truth” about how poorly the war in Ukraine is going and how damaging Westerns sanctions have been to Russia’s economy, according to a US official.

Reuters quotes the official, speaking on condition of anonymity:
Do people really believe this horse crap?

Putin is a very intelligent man, you think he ONLY listens to his yes men..............................

The fact that they are sitting around a table trying to save face tells you thats hes very aware how badly its going.

I don’t think it is horse crap. While can't say for certain if he does or does not, there’s a very big difference between listening to and fully acting upon advice.

I've mentioned it a few times now, but historically dictators (aka Putin) have surrounded themselves with weak people and those unwilling to upset the apple cart.

In these situations, echo chambers can become the norm where people say what you want to hear.

I get that, I did say hes surrounded by yes men, thats not up for debate and while im sure they are speaking of glorious victories, I cant see a man like Putin accepting that everything is going swimmingly.

To different extents Hitler did, Stalin did and so did Chamberlain. The list goes on. Regardless of intelligence, sometimes people put their head in the sand or loose a sense or reality.

I’m not saying Putin has completely lost the plot and not realising the gravity of it all - not at all - but I’m not surprised if people are questioning his decision making at this time.

More so when the people around him are either afraid of providing honest assessments or it’s dismissed.

Look we all need somebody to tell us when we are being a penis, I do agree that I doubt anybody has said that to Putin for a very long time.

I know it’s easy to go back to Nazi Germany as a reference, but there’s so many examples of where corruption, kleptocracy and general ineptitude of government caused many deaths.

Hitler’s generals said the wide drive to the south and Stalingrad was a bad idea. Goering promised an airlift he couldn’t fulfil. Hitler made meaningless decrees. Goebbles chatted wham.

All in all, a terrible situation was ignored and it caused the 6th Army to be annihilated, which changed the war. Did it get better after that? Nah, the decision making was even worse.

It’s like a snowball going down a hill.

This is the danger of absolute power - you quit getting honest feedback, which screws up decision-making. Machiavelli has a lot to say about how that screws you in the end, and some methods for going about combatting the problem. Large bureaucracies seem to inevitably succumb to it, due to internal dynamics.

There are plenty of anonymous accounts from within the FSB about how this is the problem over there.
