What this invasion and subsequent routing of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine has proved that without nuclear weapons, the Russian army is very poor and amateurish. That's not taking away anything from the exceptional and thoroughly determined as well as professional Ukrainian army. I sense that Zelensky and the Ukrainian counter offensive will retake all of eastern Ukraine as well as Crimea.
Zelensky and Ukraine know that Crimea is there for retaking and I actually believe that the Ukrainians are not that interested in peace talks because they know that although they didn't start the war.. They can certainly end it by retaking Crimea.
The Russians are desperate for peace talks since 20,000 of their army have been killed with doubled that injured as well as huge swathes of their army encircled by the Ukrainians. The Russians want out but Zelensky and Ukraine will not settle this until they have retaken Crimea.

From what I've read, UN and NATO have weird relations. NATO led airstrikes against Libya and also Kosovo. In the later, NATO tried to get UN approval but Russia and China said they would veto, so NATO just went ahead under the guise of a humanitarian mission. In Libya, NATO imposed a no-fly zone with UN approval but Russia (and other countries abstained, versus vetoing). So it seems like it could be done, especially if deemed "humanitarian" and thus not requiring a security council vote (I think!!!!....obviously not an expert in this area).

But bring a specific resolution to the floor at the UN for a non NATO humanitarian mission to evacuate Mariupol. Then see who vetoes it along with Russia, it would put China, India and certain Arab countries in the spotlight. Grim playing geopolitics with peoples lives but what's the point of the UN if there's nothing that they can do here.

Moscow and Kyiv are discussing a pause in hostilities as part of a possible deal that would involve Ukraine abandoning its drive for Nato membership in exchange for security guarantees and the prospect to join the EU, the people said under the condition of anonymity because the matter is not yet finalised. The draft ceasefire document does not contain any discussion of three of Russia’s initial core demands — “denazification”, “demilitarisation”, and legal protection for the Russian language in Ukraine — the people added. Envoys from both sides meet in Istanbul on Tuesday in a fourth round of peace talks designed to end president Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The concessions on Russia’s side come as its month-long ground offensive has largely stalled as a result of fiercer Ukrainian resistance than expected and Russian operational deficiencies. But Ukraine and its western backers remain sceptical of Putin’s intentions, worrying that the Russian president could be using the talks as a smokescreen to replenish his exhausted forces and plan a fresh offensive. David Arakhamia, head of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky’s party in parliament and a member of Kyiv’s negotiating team, told the FT the parties were close to agreement on the security guarantees and Ukraine’s EU bid but urged caution about prospects for a breakthrough. “All the issues” have been “on the table since the beginning” of negotiations but “lots of points — like in every single item there are unresolved points”, Arakhamia said. Ukraine would put the deal to a referendum in several months’ time before changing its constitution, said Zelensky — a process that could require at least a year. “The only resolved [issue] is the type of international guarantees Ukraine is looking for, but . . . we still have to get the approval from the guarantors otherwise the deal will never fly,” Arakhamia said. The draft communiqué under consideration leaves the biggest sticking point — Ukraine’s attempts to reclaim territory seized by Russia since 2014 — to be settled in a tentative future discussion by Putin and Zelensky, the people said. I had to google how much and which countries are so reliant on Russia natural gas...quite a few it turns out:
They really have left themselves very reliant on one country, strategically.
Might be time to look at modern nuclear plants again
Germany is the big one. They have a long history of opposing nuclear power and the Greens do quite well in parliamentary elections.
Also, there’s the case of former Kanzler, Gerhard Schroeder, who is chairman of Rosneft and on the board of Gazprom.
Personally, I’m surprised that more hasn’t been made of this. It’s absolutely absurd when you think about it.
