Zelenskyy: Russians being 'pushed away from Kyiv'

Ukraine's President Zelenskyy has put out his latest evening message. He says the country's troops are regaining territory around the capital and pushing back Russian troops.
He also heralds the "liberation" of Irpin - a key town on the northwest fringes of Kyiv.
"Our defenders are advancing in the Kyiv region, regaining control over Ukrainian territory," he said.
"Irpin was liberated. Well done! I am grateful to everyone who worked for this result. The occupiers are pushed away from Irpin. Pushed away from Kyiv.
"However, it is too early to talk about security in this part of our region. The fighting continues."
The president said that, despite the gains, Russian troops still control north of Kyiv and will continue their attacks even though "hundreds and hundreds of units of burned and abandoned enemy equipment" litter the area.
He said 143 children are known to have died in the war so far and that Mariupol remains under siege.
"Russian troops did not allow any humanitarian corridor to be organized today, they did not allow silence," he said.
Earlier, an official said just 586 managed to escape the city today, and Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of not allowing people to evacuate.
On the diplomatic front, the president said he had agreed with Boris Johnson "to further support our defence and strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation".

Russia would only use nuclear weapons if its existence is threatened, Kremlin says

Russia would only use nuclear weapons in the case of a "threat to the existence" of the country and not due to the current Ukraine war, the Kremlin's spokesman has told America's PBS.
"But any outcome of the operation (in Ukraine), of course is not a reason for usage of a nuclear weapon," Dmitry Peskov said.
"We have a security concept that very clearly states that only when there is a threat for existence of the state, in our country, we can use and we will actually use nuclear weapons to eliminate the threat for the existence of our country," added Mr Peskov.
There were fears over Russia's intentions on nuclear weapons early on in the war when President Putin ordered his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert.

It's no wonder the morale in the Russian army is so low. 20,000 Russian soldiers killed, twice that number injured, surrounded and encircled by the Ukrainian army and turning on each other.

I've also heard (Sky news, I think) that some Russian forces are defecting to the Ukrainian side

I suspect from that tweet that you'd believe absolutely anything.

Might have been mistranslated? But I reckon for a very significant proportion of the Russian population they'd be living in rural areas without basic amenities or infrastructure. In comparison you might (don't know for certain) see better infrastructure in comparably populated towns and villages in Ukraine.

When I travelled on the trans siberian express the majority of the settlements that lined the route were nothing more than tin roofed shacks.
