Maybe because he can't get a Coke or McDonalds, and because a barrow of rubles won't buy a potato.
Hes destroyed his whole country's economy and standard of living for a generation, for what?

Baffled by his thinking.

Not the actions of a rational person sadly.
He will call it off because the Russian economy has gone down the toilet, he’s getting his arse kicked in Ukraine, his military genius has allowed for billions in weaponry to be destroyed, he is being seen by the world to be a murderer of civilians, his own people are being arrested in their thousands for objecting, and he will lose. He cannot continuously rule a country bigger than France and Germany combined, with a 40+ Million population who hate his guts and are willing to fight him, without putting a 500,000 strong army across the country. Within a month his money will run out and that’s why he‘s looking for a face saver……
The damage is already done, he gains nothing from saying "you know what lads, ive made a terrible error", defeat at this point isnt an option.

Indeed, but he is only interested in his own political survival and the money he has squirrelled away. He may get away with it, he may end up in a gulag, I don’t know because Russia tends not to do a ‘Brutus’ on them. But I do think he is finished…..

Look to the East I'd imagine. Trade with China etc. Will probably nationalise some industry they've lost maybe who knows, there's prob people with a better understanding than me but I doubt he's sitting scratching his plums. You'd expect he'll have something up his sleeve if he's making these decisions.

As the poster said above: a friendly state clause may exist
Could sell the oil that way, but would have to sell it below market price , (shell aready bought oil that way before coming under pressure and have stopped doing it)
again thats hurting himself and that's saying western friendly states don't up production and drive the price down .
The gas is a different proposition, there isn't the infrastructure to get it to China , the pipeline towards China isn't big enough to take anything like the capacity as it sells to the west and even if they built it , there is the cost in time and money, be the same problem to any other customers, plus, the plants around the world making it into liquid form are already working to full capacity so thats not an option either.
The Russian infrastructure is all set up to sell to the west for Gas, shut that off shut your market off.
He can't just pick it up and move it.
A lot of the specialist equipment in there energy industry is made in The USA they have already stopped exporting to Russia
Again something that will have an affect in time.
If they get into bed to with China a country they see not just as a neighbours but rivals they would be basically putting there bollocks in china's hands, how long before they squeezed them?
Cant think of any other customers who could take up the volume of business , possibly maybe India/Pakistan?
Problem for Putin is time and money would not be on his side if he jumps that way.
His gamble would be the European countries wouldn't be able to take the pressure.
I don't really know if he is right or wrong on that on, time will tell
Cleverer fellas than me will have thought it all out I havnt a clue who is right or wrong , but it looks like a bad move from Putin to me.

Of course hes finished.

The issue is the damage he causes on his way down.

It could be quite considerable and I dont mean just to Russias economy.

And Russias history is littered with Brutus.

Spot on, but he also has a problem with oil. Again the infrastructure is geared towards the west. China doesn’t have enough ships to carry it, no letters of credit are available for others to pick it up on a spot price, he’s stuffed. And even if he managed to get over all the issues he will be selling it for peanuts. He has screwed Russia…….

You could be bang on mate but it def seems he's making that move.

He will cause major damage, obviously to Ukraine and it’s people, also to the West financially, but if we don’t do it now, he will try it on again, so it has to be now. i always wanted Russia to be a part of the ‘West’, and they could easily have been, but Putin has now removed that possibility for yet another generation….

Putin is more like Stalin, a nasty piece of work, and Stalin wasn’t taken down…..
