I'm in Kyiv. Lived here since August 2017. The flag on the motherland monument is at half mast today.
Many Ukrainians have said for a while that they do not believe there will be an invasion and that the western media were exaggerating. Many still feel that Putin will only go in to the East. Most westerners have left- some to western Ukraine, some back home. I have a Ukrainian partner (not married, which complicates matters, but the crisis emails from gov.uk are indicating that they are relaxing visa requirements for partners, so I will phone today. We have contingency plans if the full scale invasion happens. It's pretty scary and we are all watching the news avidly.

Good luck to you and your partner mate

This whole situation is horrible

Wishing you all the best

Convinced now that nato would abandon Poland and Romania etc.

Think about it. A war under those circumstances would be fought on NATO territory meaning loss of civilian life. Ultimately they’d probably need to use nukes against Russia to prevent it, and they wouldn’t want to put Western Europe/USA under threat of a nuclear strike.
You're still missing the point that it's highly unlikely that Russia would attack a NATO country, and we won't be pulling troops or equipment out of either.

Ukraine Poland et al.

Always thought that would be in 2024 (timed to coincide with the US election) but I guess not now.
Again, this is a completely different affair. While they have air capability to attack, their blue-water navy is far from ready to move the number of troops required.

The last time I looked, they were looking at 2030+ to be ready in terms of naval capability as they'd need to move a lot of troops - think Sea Lion etc.

From the Guardian’s liveblog:

Reynders said that in time, depending on developments, it “will be necessary to ensure that there are no more imports of goods or services from Russia, such as energy, and that Russia’s global access to financial services is terminated”.

That the EU are saying that (given the requirement for unanimity) suggests all the West is aboard with the planned sanctions regime.

That's what is actually needed, however it'll be interesting to see if the unison stays strong as hitting the financial and energy sectors could cripple them.

It will also drive prices up on the continent and world wide.

I think it will for as long as Putin is acting in the way he is - aside from corruption, there’s no reason why anyone west of Ukraine would ever want to tolerate this behaviour, it’s a clear and serious threat to the safety of all of Europe including us.
