Kiev is a European capital city not some war torn backwater

There will be immediate surrender, not hand to hand combat anywhere outside the eastern regions.

And not even the eastern regions now that he’s sent the army in.
While the calibre may not always be great, you have a pretty large standing army and a high percentage of the population who won't be happy with the invasion.

Therefore, I wouldn't be so sure as it could get messy.

Apparently they’ve lost 10,000 men in 8 years fighting the Russians. A proper invasion, which this is, would means hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian deaths.

Ukraine itself has a history of surrendering to occupying forces. They even waved the Germans through, rather than fight them in ww2.

Not going to happen I’m afraid.

However, it might not be as easy as they would like it to be - think Chechnya et al.
Yeah, the Russian army is notoriously poorly organised and ill disciplined.

I remember reading a book on the Chechnya conflicts in the 90's and second conflict in 1999/2000 from a Russian soldiers perspective and the words 'disorganised chaos' springs to mind.

Rife drug & alcohol abuse, regulars violently bullying the conscripts/national service recruits & officers setting up their own mini black markets to sell of military equipment.

There was even a chapter where the authors unit ended up manning this building as a fortified position within Chechnya itself and were forgotten about by the main force as supplies stopped coming. The regulars were happy to see out the war there getting drunk, selling off their equipment to the locals and beating the crap out of the young conscripts who they were basically using as personal servants at that point.

It was so bad that some of the conscripts were deserting and trying to make it home back though Chechnyan territory. They'd find some of them weeks later strung up in a nearby forest.

I wonder how much if anything has changed since?

The book in question if anyone is interested:

Just look at how many suicides occur in the Russian military in comparison to Western ones. Its insane.

Yes.
There's already been reports in the news of rife drunkeness and soldiers selling off diesel from their vehicles.
Though their force in sheer number shouldn't be underestimated going forward.
they have the firepower, its not just about the boots on the ground.

Look at the airforce, artillery for example. Ukraine could be completely flattened, if they wished.

Perhaps this had something to do with it.

The most likely operational plan in the event of full-scale invasion probably is to pull Ukraine out of position and ideally get a blocking force in place, then wheel around on Kyiv and steamroll it. It's possible that Ukraine will fight, particularly over the ground in between the border and the city, if they have a chance. If not, they'll probably declare Kyiv an open city.

Which is all true. However, all those components aren’t as effective when dealing with asymmetrical warfare and insurgencies as they’ve previously discovered.
That's probably how they'll fight, should they decide to organize a resistance after the fall of the city.
