As a neutral Irish man, who simply wants peace, I am really concerned about this escalation. I am acutely aware how a Serbian nationalist killing an Austrian heir to the throne ended up with millions dying including tens of thousands of Irish men.

Please God this backs off.

I have an ancestor buried in La Sucrerie cemetery who probably barely stuck his head up on the 1st July 1916 before his life was ended. I hate violence. I am seriously concerned about what is happening in Ukraine.

My suspicion is Ukraine would capitulate within a few days/weeks. For all their fighting talk, a guerilla war on the eastern front is one thing, hand to hand combat in capital cities is quite another. NATO or anyone else clearly won’t provide troops on their behalf.

Very interesting. Agree with a lot of that. However, we really need to bang some heads together or many lives will be lost.

I really fear that this is going to escalate, and there are too many nuclear weapons around.

Who is going to fire a nuclear weapon over Ukraine? Russia has no need to, because NATO and the west won’t touch an invasion.

Maybe if Poland was invaded, but even there these so called ‘obligations’ by NATO to defend have never been put to the test in a practical sense.

Nobody. As I've mentioned previously, there'll be no traditional boots on the ground let alone nuclear weapons. Poland however would be very different.

Russia know that and as such it's unlikely that'll ever happen.

Not some Churchillian bluster, but just wait until the summer when the Brits and other Europeans rub shoulders with those Russian families on holiday in Turkey and such like. Their normal ignoring queues and nicking your table while you go for your full English, they will become emboldened by what's gone on and will be even more boorish.

Russia has proved it is prepared to sacrifice men in the Donbas region but the west are such cowards when it comes to military action if it involves even a few of its soldiers dying, that I could even see Poland abandoned.

Honestly, it's a huge difference. Poland is part of NATO and part of the EU before even talking about history and the moral obligations we have to them.

Ukraine, for all for all intents and purposes, isn't seen in the same way hence why the only response will be economic sanctions and the clandestine stuff.

Looking at Ossetia and Transnistra (spelling), I would not be surprised if this was going to be close to the end states it is. Frozen war.

There's a significant Russian speaking population in Estonia so them and Lithuania are far more likely than Poland.

Agreed, the Baltic states are hard targets.

I think you have to stand together for any member of NATO, otherwise what's the point of being a member?

Thin end of the wedge if we accept invasion of absolutely any of them.
