Just spoke with a client who is in Moscow at the moment and he was saying that no one there is really giving the slightest [Poor language removed] at the situation at the moment. It's just not being discussed at all. Strange times.

Watched the BBC prog on the Rise of the Nazis last night.
The thrust of this excellent production was the fact the Stalin ignored the warnings of Molotov in particular, that the massive build up of the German war machine along the entire western Soviet border was not Hitler's assertion that he was engaging his forces in war games as a prelude to invading Britain, but preparations for a full on invasion of Russia.
Just a thought at this moment in time.

It's almost like Russia is playing a completely separate domestic game to its international one.

Just been reading a long essay on reddit about why Russia would create tension and then do nothing more than that and how it could strengthen their position immediately west of Russia. I didn't buy much that was being discussed but I do agree that Russia is looking at things differently than the west is.

I couldn't even begin to second guess what they will do next, and that's more than likely part of the Russian strategy. I suspect questioning of NATO goals/ objectives from within the member states is going to happen soon and potentially made to look bad by responding to non-existing invasions to non-NATO countries outside their remit, whilst economies are struggling. Similar internal criticism won't be tolerated in Russia.

Things look to be escalating again.
Russia looking to evacuate Donetsk, now an estimated 190k troops on the Ukraine border and Putin accusing the Ukrainian forces of human rights abuses.

Just have to hope it’s more bluster really.

I doubt that very much - even if they don't invade, this has at least reminded Europe that they are still there, that he (Putin) does keep doing craziness like this (and is going to do it to them irrespective of what they do) and that being in NATO is much safer than being outside of it at this point.

If they do invade, things will be even worse. I half expect Russia to announce an invasion one day and Sweden / Finland to join NATO within 24 hours.
