Finding it really interesting that the UK & USA are using their overwhelming intelligence gathering capabilities to try and wrong-foot Putin on a daily basis:
Think there's a fair amount of truth in this:
Yeah his actions are weird. NATO has called his bluff and he obviously feels backed into a corner. It is so difficult to find any logic whatsoever in his motives right now. Either he doesn't fear any consequences whatsoever (including NATO ramping up on the border in a very large way and going back to the Cold War again) or he is just crazy; either is very worrying.
It's the last desperate roar of a dying lion. Russia is a failed state with a tinpot economy and dwindling influence. It's actually quite sad to see considering the possibilities that were presented to a post-communist Russia.Whats in this for Russia?
They either control Ukraine or they don't, either way they have the west on their doorstep. They already control port access via Crimea.
Even if they destabilize Ukraine and annex a few more provinces, they'll just hasten the westernization of western Ukraine.
It's like Putin just wants a big pissing contest and everyone else is like 'good man Vlad, now put it away'.
If there were to be a full invasion, I'd imagine every NATO/EU country would impose economic sanctions on both Russia and anyone doing business with Russia. It wouldn't take long before their economy collapses, and yea, they could shut gas off but I think there are a lot of world leaders itching to put the squeeze on Putin.
I just don't get what his motivation is.
Rather romantic view. Russia was encouraged to behave and go down the gangster state route, and still is. As long as their money keeps flowing in the right western greedy corporate entities, will always be room Putin and his ilk... Half the reason he does what he is doing. Knowing full well the internal conflict it causes in supposed collective enemies. It's the last desperate roar of a dying lion. Russia is a failed state with a tinpot economy and dwindling influence. There's no doubt that the West has been prepared to tolerate a lot of what Putin has done (knowing full-well that he's all fur coat and no knickers) for a long time, and money has a lot to do with it. But we're now seeing a declining Russia desperate to remain relevant on the world stage - and that's clearly making them more susceptible to making illogical desperate decisions.Rather romantic view. Putin has made himself a multi billionaire, whilst being paid circa £70000 a year as President.
Everything he does is to protect himself from that being taken away.

I mean, if it is indeed Putin's intention to sow division in his enemies, this attempt couldn't have gone any worse.
If he hadn’t spent the last decade trying to topple every Western government with dark money, troll farms, and kompromat, maybe they wouldn’t be so angrily united against him. He is the single largest threat to us all and must be destroyed.I mean, if it is indeed Putin's intention to sow division in his enemies, this attempt couldn't have gone any worse.
Agree to an extent. Although I think the solution is to make Ukraine a member of NATO and then completely ignore him and let him fester away as Russia continues to decline. If he hadn’t spent the last decade trying to topple every Western government with dark money, troll farms, and kompromat, maybe they wouldn’t be so angrily united against him.
