Whats in this for Russia?
They either control Ukraine or they don't, either way they have the west on their doorstep. They already control port access via Crimea.
Even if they destabilize Ukraine and annex a few more provinces, they'll just hasten the westernization of western Ukraine.
It's like Putin just wants a big pissing contest and everyone else is like 'good man Vlad, now put it away'.

If there were to be a full invasion, I'd imagine every NATO/EU country would impose economic sanctions on both Russia and anyone doing business with Russia. It wouldn't take long before their economy collapses, and yea, they could shut gas off but I think there are a lot of world leaders itching to put the squeeze on Putin.

I just don't get what his motivation is.

It is so difficult to find any logic whatsoever in his motives right now. Either he doesn't fear any consequences whatsoever (including NATO ramping up on the border in a very large way and going back to the Cold War again) or he is just crazy; either is very worrying.
Yeah his actions are weird. NATO has called his bluff and he obviously feels backed into a corner.

The obvious choice would be to withdraw, de-escalate and commence talks on long term European security.

However he appears to be going down the road of Mighty Russia will crush all who stand in her way.

If he does go through with it Russia will be isolated from the rest of the world and he’ll only have China (who will bum him over trade deals), Iran, North Korea and Syria as chums. What a gang of scruffs!

My very juvenile take on this.
A generation and a half of Russians have enjoyed so many freedoms and wealth that would be unimaginable to those living in the old USSR.
Should those comforts suddenly stop, I reckon that Vladimir would need to be more worried about what's going on within his own borders

It's the last desperate roar of a dying lion. Russia is a failed state with a tinpot economy and dwindling influence. It's actually quite sad to see considering the possibilities that were presented to a post-communist Russia.

Rather romantic view. Russia was encouraged to behave and go down the gangster state route, and still is. As long as their money keeps flowing in the right western greedy corporate entities, will always be room Putin and his ilk... Half the reason he does what he is doing. Knowing full well the internal conflict it causes in supposed collective enemies.

There's no doubt that the West has been prepared to tolerate a lot of what Putin has done (knowing full-well that he's all fur coat and no knickers) for a long time, and money has a lot to do with it. But we're now seeing a declining Russia desperate to remain relevant on the world stage - and that's clearly making them more susceptible to making illogical desperate decisions.

I mean, if it is indeed Putin's intention to sow division in his enemies, this attempt couldn't have gone any worse.

Putin has made himself a multi billionaire, whilst being paid circa £70000 a year as President.

Everything he does is to protect himself from that being taken away.

That’s true, but as with all thieves a reckoning comes sooner or later.

There will be little help liberating Ukraine if its invaded and becomes Greater Russia...

The Yanks are furious with the duplicity of our financial services. The EU and debate at home worries over Brexit freeport move which begins the process of working round any sanctions that might come...
Declining Russia heard that for years all that happens is continuation of modernizing its armed forces then creates a diplomatic crisis to its benefit.

If he hadn’t spent the last decade trying to topple every Western government with dark money, troll farms, and kompromat, maybe they wouldn’t be so angrily united against him. He is the single largest threat to us all and must be destroyed.

Agree to an extent. Although I think the solution is to make Ukraine a member of NATO and then completely ignore him and let him fester away as Russia continues to decline.

Be no destroying, yes Russia is no match for the West, Reckon UK and France hypothetically could deal with the threat alone. Its the cost in life that matters, and he knows it.

Putin wont go down like Gaddafi or Hussian. He would go down with Russia taking 10s of thousands if not more of British and French forces also many thousands more of own armed and civilian and whoever was in the way.

Just stop the money from within being filtered out in to the West which UK is the largest benefactor, they will soon topple him in a coup once the wifes and kids cant have the western life.
