I live in Berlin. I cannot tell you how significant today's standing ovation for Chancellor Scholz in the Bundestag is.

Without wishing to be flippant, the German war machine has been rebooted after 77 years. The pointed helmets will be coming out of cold storage. German weaponry can now be sold to war zones. 2% of German GDP to be spent on the German Army every year is huge given the sheer size of the German economy. The Panzers are on the roll. I hate to say this, but Putin has opened Pandora's box.
You probably noticed the extremely peaceful and measured approach the Germans have in international conflict. I don't think that'll change.
Were in the 'retorics'phase of the conflict. I'll have to see it to believe it.

One person wondered why the Russians (re) took Chernobyl
Today somebody else cleared it up for me.
The defenders could, when the wind was in the right direction, blow the whole thing up and dose the Russians.
A proper 'dirty bomb' .
Most reports and analyses seem to suggest it was prized (by Russian offensives) for its location above all else.

It changed today. What Scholz announced is the breaking of all German military taboos. Germany - the biggest economy in Europe - will now spend 2% of its GDP on its army and defence forces. They resisted this for years. Trump wanted them to do it - but the reality is 2% of Germany's economy absolutely dwarfs 2% of pretty much any other in terms of size. Germany avoided sending weaponry to war zones on a point of principle. This principle has now been thrown on the bonfire of taboos. The German weapons industry is one of the three biggest in the world. Those people are celebrating right now.

The truth of the matter is, Germany has little choice but to do this. Putin is an existential threat. Countries that demand Germany makes huge ecomomic sacrifices (turning off Russia gas pipelines, damaging their economy by excluding Russia from SWIFT) will now have to accept that the Germans will no longer be passive observers. Germany, finally, has to punch its weight. This is bad news for Putin, but it is also bad news for all of those countries, such as Poland, who wanted to benefit from the economic power of Germany within the EU - without the nasty side effects of German military might.

Make no mistake, there are elements in German society who will absolutely love this. They are in every society. But today is a game changer. German pacifism was buttressed by guilt and taboo. In the absence of the latter, how long more will the former keep things in check?
