Ukraine may not join NATO but security guarantees could be made by NATO countries. Russia will have to make some concessions too asking for Ukraine to be neutral and demilitarised would leave it easy pickings in the future, I'd say we will see land handed to Russia (officially recognised) this would be a buffer zone and the remainder of Ukraine come under some sort of NATO protection while not joining NATO.

TBF security guarantees short of NATO membership are worthless unless the countries guaranteeing things are going to declare war on Russia for any breaches.

Since they aren’t (and shouldn’t) then there are things that should be done instead, not the least of which should be doing what Finland did after the Continuation War and ensuring that the population as a whole would be able to cause severe damage to any invasion.

The rest of Europe and especially us needs to do this as well as rebuilding conventional forces, restoring military industrial capacity and having strategic independence.

No, of course not. Yet, some of us aren't stuck in such a cyclical pro-Russian time warp as to need to roll back the years and say... "But what about this..."

I say it as I see it, based on my values. If Ukraine were to commit war crimes now, I'd openly condemn it; likewise, I openly condemn Russia's blatant land grab.

I condemn their attack on civilian, civilian infrastructure, their war crimes and this attack on a sovereign nation, as I would if Ukraine did it the other way.

Putin keeps lowering the bar on the use of nukes. I fully expect an announcement that if anyone tells a joke or writes a nasty piece in a newspaper then he will nuke them. He seems to forget that he’s not the only one with these devices and that any use against USA, U.K. or France will result in Moscow, St Petersburg and Russia disappearing….

I don't know much about what went on in 2014, but I do know that there is a world of difference between a few phone calls in 2014 and deliberately killing civilians in 2024.

I don't disbelieve you that Ukranians may have committed some atrocities in 2014, is that what you are using as justification for their country being invaded now? Because it seems a rather flimsy excuse.

And is there a particular reason your justification appears to stretch back only to 2014? Could the events under Stalin perhaps be used to justify why Ukranians have very little love for the Russians, or is that too far back to matter?

Russian state-owned news agency Tass is carrying further quotes from Sergey Naryshkin, director of Russia’s foreign intelligence service, about the country’s new nuclear doctrine.

It quotes him saying that the new doctrine was met with “caution” by the west, adding:

They understand that the adjustments announced by Putin largely devalue the efforts of the US and Nato to inflict a strategic defeat on our country, and the planned expansion of the list of grounds for the use of nuclear weapons effectively excludes the possibility of victory over the Russian armed forces on the battlefield.

Imagine risking this conflict just to back a gangster regime in Ukraine.

What a world we live in when you become desperate for a lunatic like Trump to be sworn in to be the adult in the room.
